At that time, the first Test match was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where the second was played in Bengaluru. Hansie Cronje was the captain of South Africa and the captain of the Indian team was Sachin Tendulkar.

Bad defeat in Wankhede

The first match of the 2000 Test series was held at Wankhede, Mumbai. The Indian team won the toss and decided to bat first. Indian batsmen badly collapsed in front of South African bowlers.

The Indian team collapsed for 225 runs in the first innings. Sachin Tendulkar played the captaincy innings. Sachin missed his century by 3 runs. He scored the maximum 97 runs. Ajit Agarkar also played an unbeaten inning of 41 runs.

After this South Africa came to bat. Indian bowlers bowled tremendously. The entire South African team was reduced to 176 runs. For India, Sachin and Javagal Srinath took maximum 3-3 wickets. After this, something happened which the Indian team could not have even imagined.

Clean sweep in Bengaluru 

The second test match between India and South Africa took place in Bengaluru. In this match also, India won the toss and batted first. This decision was not good for India. The Indian team was all out for 158 runs in the first innings. Anil Kumble scored the highest 36 runs for India.

South African batted brilliantly in the first innings and scored 479 runs. 5 batsmen including Jacques Kallis scored fifty. Anil Kumble took maximum 6 wickets.

Even in the second innings, the Indian team could not do anything special. India could score only 250 runs. Mohammad Azharuddin scored the highest score of 102 runs. South Africa won this match by an innings and 71 runs. In this way, South Africa was successful in defeating the Indian team in a Test series in India for the first time.
