AC Milan vs Inter Milan is one of the greatest rivalries in world football, not least because they share the iconic San Siro, and the two Italian greats are set to face off against each other in the semi-finals of the Champions League for a shot at another European trophy in the final.
Both clubs are synonymous with Europe’s premier club competition, and each will be looking to return to past glories in 2023.
The Derby della Madonnina first took place in January 1909, with AC Milan running out 3-2 winners, and in the 114 years since, there have been 235 competitive meetings between the pair.
Fittingly, the record between AC and Inter is fairly evenly split, with the former taking the spoils on 79 occasions compared to the latter’s 87. In total, they have drawn 69 games, too.
Seven-time winners Milan haven’t lifted the trophy since 2007, while Jose Mourinho was the last manager to guide Inter to European glory in 2010. The special one broke a 45-year duck for the Nerazzurri, who previously won the competition under Helenio Herrera’s catenaccio-inspired gaze in 1965.
The current iterations of both Milan clubs may not be so ‘grande’, nor as tactically revolutionary as Arrigo Sacchi’s Rossoneri, but they’re gritty and typically Italian. It’s bound to be a spectacle at one of football’s great amphitheatres when the Derby della Madonnina rivals meet over two legs.
Inter have won 68 Serie A games against AC Milan, with 56 draws and just 54 AC Milan wins.
In the UEFA Champions League, it’s a different story in their small number of Champions League matches. While they’ve only played each other on four occasions in European competition, across two legs, AC Milan have won two and managed two draws, leaving Inter winless against their foes. Until 2023, when Inter Milan beat AC Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, 2-0.
And Inter followed that 2-0 victory with another 1-0 victory over their city rivals AC Milan in tge second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Sending the Nerazzurri into the first final since 2010 under Jose Mourinho.
