Brighton and Hove Albion return to Premier League action on Saturday 12 August 2023 in a season that promises to be exciting for the club's fans during Brighton & Hove Albion vs Luton Town.

Their first opponents will be newly-promoted Luton Town, who braved all odds to win the EFL Championship promotion playoffs.

The Hatters, on paper, do not look like they will pose any challenge for the Seagulls but everyone understands that football can be a mysterious sport.

Brighton are currently dominating transfer news headlines for their refusal to budge on their valuation of Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo. Chelsea are doing all they can to sign the 21-year-old, who also wants to leave. But Brighton are rejecting bids and blocking negotiation efforts.

The season's curtain raiser is a few days away and while it is unlikely that Caicedo gets sold by then, the game against Luton Town could be a preview of De Zerbi's plans without the Ecuador international.

Luton Town, meanwhile, are buzzing with excitement over their first year in the top flight. The town is active, merchandise is being sold and fans are planning trips all over England just to see their team play Premier League football.

They will find that top-flight football is not welcoming, but it will be an experience that will be ingrained in their hearts and minds for as long as they live, breathe and support the Hatters.

Rob Edwards and Roberto De Zerbi are among the league's youngest coaches and this will be a tactical battle to watch for neutrals.

Many predict that De Zerbi will triumph thanks to his experience but more importantly, many believe that the match against Brighton is the best learning experience for the younger and greener Rob Edwards.

Some analysts believe that their model is similar to that of Sheffield United, who did not invest heavily in their squad when they first gained Premier League promotion a few years back but counted on their squad's togetherness to break through and finish in mid-table.

They are relegation candidates but given that none of the last four Premier League debutants have been relegated after their first season, any result they can muster against Brighton will only spur them to action.

Plans are already in motion, merchandise is being traded for both sides and tactics are being refined for what is set to be a baptism of fire for the minnows, Luton Town.

It is an epic in waiting.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Luton Town: Match Tickets:

The match is one of those that will be featured in the goal rush for 12 August 2023. That puts the game at 3 PM. It will be broadcast live on Sky Sports and on other broadcast partners around the world.

Tickets for the match have already gone up on sale on each club's website. Luton Town tickets to the game will be difficult to procure for the club's fans and this is set to be a recurring situation for the first month of the 2023/24 season. This is due to their Kenilworth Road home stadium not being up to Premier League standards.

Ticket resellers will make a killing from Hatters' fans, starting with Brighton vs Luton Town tickets. Luton fans will not mind, however, as it is their first-ever experience of top-flight football in their history.

The Brighton tickets and Luton tickets will definitely be sold out and more fans will be forced to watch the game from home or from their favourite pubs.

40-year-old Rob Edwards will also pull a crowd to the game at the AMEX. The Luton Town manager is one of the youngest in the Premier League and is in his first season as a top-flight manager. He will be receiving a baptism of fire against the experienced De Zerbi.

Fans of both clubs and neutrals will surely be looking for tickets in order to see how he holds up on 12 August 2023 at the 3 PM kickoff.

Team news

While Brighton could lose Moises Caicedo this summer, it is unlikely that the Ecuadorian leaves before the start of the new season.

This means that he will be anchoring De Zerbi's midfield against the newly-promoted side Luton.

The Seagulls have also lost the talents of Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool, which means more midfield action for 22-year-old Scotsman Billy Gilmour. The "Scotland Xavi '' has been unable to make his claim for a starting berth thanks to injury and Mac Allister's better form but now, he has the chance to hold his own in the team.

He will be rivaled by new signing Mahmoud Dahoud, who joined on a free from Borussia Dortmund.

The Syrian-born Germany international is one of six arrivals at the AMEX this season and is the highest-rated player in that lineup. The 27-year-old will be competing with veteran and fellow new signing James Milner and Gilmour for spots in the middle of the park for De Zerbi.

The Seagulls could also debut a new goalkeeper on the day. Bart Verbruggen signed from RSC Anderlecht after Robert Sanchez moved to Chelsea. He will be competing with Jason Steele, however, who forced the Spaniard out of the starting XI in the latter stages of last season.

Luton Town will be playing with rookies, with only new signing, defensive midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, being the only one with Premier League experience.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Luton Town: Lineups

Brighton and Hove Albion will most likely give debuts to their new signings because of the calibre of the team they are welcoming to the AMEX.

We expect to see former FCV Farul forward Adrian Mazilu the same way Julio Enciso, Evan Ferguson and Jeremy Sarmiento (before his loan to West Bromwich Albion this summer) were given runs in the team last season.

Some of the usual suspects including Kaoru Mitoma, Pervis Estupiñan and captain Lewis Dunk will start while De Zerbi will work on tweaking the rest of the team. Caicedo is likely going to sit this game out.

Brighton: Steele; Estupiñan, Webster, Dunk, Veltman; Groß, Dahoud; Mitoma, Pedro, March; Welbeck.

Luton Town have little to lose in this match because of the low expectations that many have of them, given their history and stature among the big clubs in the league.

They will want to impress but they will make do with what they have.

For this reason, they will definitely go with the team that has worked for them in the past, which led them to seal a Premier League ticket for the 2023/24 season.

They will also incorporate their new signings, former Manchester United midfielder Tahith Chong and former Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba. Both players have faced off against the biggest teams and they will count on their experience to help them.

It is also expected that the team they will field against Brighton will be their main starting XI for the rest of the season.

Luton Town: Shea; Bell, Lockyer, Andersen, Doughty, Kaboré; Chong, Nakamba, Mpanzu; Adebayo, Morris.

Prediction

Brighton under Roberto De Zerbi will always attack. However, they will attempt to draw the opposing team out with their pauses in possession, especially at the back, before progressing the ball.

This is something that De Zerbi has drilled into the team from his first month there. It is this brand of football that has made him attractive to the biggest teams in the league and it is this brand of football that has taken the Seagulls to Europe for the first time.

Newly-promoted Luton Town will find it hard to top this, especially away at the AMEX. The EFL Championship promotion playoff winners will be hoping to make a good impression of themselves, however, especially with their stadium issues pending.

They will be playing carefully not to disappoint their fans who will pay tens to hundreds of pounds to travel and watch the game at Brighton. For this reason, we expect them to play counter-attacking football hinged on a compact defence.

The game will be tight as a result, but it is hard not to see Brighton win, especially at home.
