Premier League 2023-23: Chelsea vs Liverpool Match Report
First Half:
Diogo Jota and Dominik Szoboszlai both saw early efforts drift wide before Mohamed Salah clipped the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the box. Chelsea began to settle, and Jackson almost turned home a cross from the new skipper, Reece James. Liverpool then broke the deadlock out of nowhere.
Salah provided a brilliant pass that sliced through Chelsea's backline and Luis Diaz finished comfortably. The New No 7 looked like a new signing for the Liverpool side. Jackson tried to provide the equalizer but it didn't come so easily. After excellent work on the touchline by Colwill, the ball was fed into the feet of the forward. He managed to bounce off two challenges and fired toward the goal. His effort, unfortunately, drifted wide. A Trent Alexander-Arnold pass was slipped through to Salah, who finished brilliantly. The VAR ruled it offside.
From a Chelsea corner, a clearance was knocked back into the penalty area by Chilwell, and debutant Disasi was in the right position to score past Alisson in the Liverpool goal. Moments later, Enzo Fernandez played a pass through to Chilwell, and he rounded Alisson and tapped home. It was a superb goal but VAR ruled it offside.

Second Half:
There were no changes made at the break. Chelsea had more control of the ball in the second period. That enabled Fernandez to begin dictating possession and an excellent pass from the Argentine fashioned a shooting opportunity for Chilwell. Alisson was there to save Liverpool and he did quite nicely. Liverpool tried to probe Chelsea's backline. But Pochettino's work was really showing off. Chelsea looked more comfortable on the ball and they did put Liverpool's backline under pressure. Colwill produced one excellent pass forward for Jackson to race on to and he managed to get a shot on goal. But Liverpool's saviour Alisson was there to stop it.
Both sides made attack-minded changes in the final 20 minutes. Neither Manager was willing to settle for the draw. Liverpool came close as a late effort from Darwin Nunez took a deflection and beat the diving Sanchez. Fortunately, the ball landed just wide of the Chelsea net. The final whistle confirmed that the match has been drawn and both teams will share an important point. Liverpool's debutants really played brilliantly but Chelsea looked more comfortable than Liverpool ahead of the rest of the season.
"It is the start of the season and we both had disappointing seasons last year. We want to make things right and we were dominant for the first 25 minutes but then the momentum went to Chelsea. It is not easy, a good game that could have gone each way."
- Liverpool Captain, Virgil Van Dijk
"We deserved to win. I am proud of the team and it bodes well for the future. I like to stay in the box when we attack and I had the chance to score, it is good for me and the team."
