A fast start, followed by an exciting final half-hour. That’s the summary of this first leg in the round of 16. Bailey scored early, but Club Brugge quickly equalised through De Cuyper. The contest remained close-fought thereafter, but Aston Villa struck twice in quick succession to secure the victory late on; Mechele scoring an unfortunate own goal as he stretched to clear Rogers' cross and Asensio striking a confident penalty. Aston Villa move into a commanding position in the tie, while Club Brugge have a lot to do in Birmingham next week.
