Italian Football Federation initiates investigation after Juve Stabia fans celebrate Romano Mussolini’s goal with fascist salutes
Italian Football Federation initiates an investigation to cultivate the instance of Serie B side Juve Stabia fans celebrating Romano Mussolini’s goal with fascist salutes.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Monday that it has begun investigations concerning the behaviour of supporters from the Serie B club Juve Stabia.
This follows an incident on Sunday during Juve Stabia's game against Cesena when Juve Stabia fans celebrated a goal scored by Romano Floriani Mussolini with fascist salutes. Importantly, the 21-year-old footballer is the great-grandson of Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini.
According to footage circulated on social media, Juve Stabia supporters repeatedly shouted "Mussolini" at the instigation of the stadium announcer while performing a Roman salute or fascist salute.
Romano Floriani Mussolini scored his first senior professional goal for Juve Stabia, where he is on loan from Lazio for the 2024-25 season. The young right-back scored the only goal against local rivals Cesena, which gave Juve Stabia all three points in the Serie B.
However, Romano's joy of scoring his first professional goal was overshadowed by the Juve Stabia fans who celebrated his goal with a Roman salute, or fascist salute, that many people find to be offensive.
Romano always chose to distance himself from his family's political legacy to focus on his career as a footballer. When he had his first breakout with Lazio, his family background naturally came up but Romano requested people to judge him based on his performances.
He stated the following to Gazzetta dello Sport this year:
My great-grandfather, Benito, was a very important person for Italy but we are in 2024 and the world has changed,
However, The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has taken a firm stance regarding this situation and started an immediate proceeding that can result in hefty financial sanctions or a ban if the club is proven guilty.
FICG stated to AFP:
Officials from the federal prosecutor's office (of the FIGC) will send a report on the incident, along with video evidence, to the sports judge of Serie B for a ruling,
Earlier this year, Italy’s top court ruled that performing the fascist salute is not a crime, unless it endangers public order or risks reviving the banned fascist party. In these controversial circumstances, Juve Stabia club has published an official statement on its club website denying the allegations.

Esultanza F.Mussolini: il comunicato ufficiale della S.S. Juve Stabia 1907
SS Juve Stabia 1907, having taken note of the deliberate desire of a part of the national press to see in a simple exultation of the Stabia public, which followed the goal of an exemplary boy and a footballer who is defending the club's colours at his best on the football pitch, the most followed SPORT in the nation and not only, in other words with attacks on the square and on the member himself, specifies that the position of the club is one of absolute tranquility because for 117 years in Castellammare di Stabia people have celebrated for a goal of their hometown team and since the stadium has had a speaker and a sound system that following a goal of Juve Stabia the name of the footballer who scored the goal is announced by our speaker and the surname by the public with emphasis and raising their arms to the sky in a sign of sporting exultation for their favourite team and which represents their hometown. Romano Floriani Mussolini's goal against Cesena was his tenth at home in the championship, his ninth at Menti, and as always, the process after the goal was the same.
President Langella, surprised by the media coverage of the goal, which earned him fourth place in the standings, declared:
"Our ideals are always the same, they are based on fairness and respect for others, a healthy competitive spirit linked to sport and they do not change based on the surname of our members who are exemplary boys. We have fans who make us proud because they are among the most fair in the footballing boot, always being close to us. We do not accept exploitation for a golden boy like Romano Floriani Mussolini and the same goes for our fans who celebrated as they have always done in the past with any other athlete. The team is already ready and focused on the next challenge, pursuing our goal of salvation."

5. Thierry Henry | 20 Years | France:
Before Kylian Mbappe became a familiar name, there was Thierry Henry in a star-studded French team including the biggest stars like Zinedine Zidane, Lillian Thuram, and Patrick Viera led by Didier Deschamps. Henry at the age of just 20, burst into the limelight with France, winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and craved his name among the youngest players to win the FIFA World Cup.
However, Henry did not make an appearance against Brazil, where France won 3-0. He had already played his role, scoring thrice in six matches. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Henry was one of the guaranteed starters in the squad.
4. Kylian Mbappe | 19 Years | France:
With astonishing speed and agility, it feels like he is in a sports car on a football field. Kylian Mbappe announced himself at the age of 19. Mbappe became the youngest player to score in the FIFA World Cup final since Pele in 1958, bringing back the title to France after 20 years.
He was one of the most important players for France throughout the season. In the round of 16, Mbappe managed to score a brace in five minutes, knocking out Lionel Messi's Argentina 4-3. Mbappe craved his name among the youngest players to win the FIFA World Cup.
3. Giuseppe Bergomi | 18 Years | Italy:
Giuseppe Bergomi was selected by the Italian national team coach Enzo Bearzot in the 1982 FIFA World Cup squad. He started the tournament on the bench and during the group stage did a great job marking Socrates and Serginho against Brazil in a memorable 3-2 win. Bergomi impressed everyone with his maturity in the Semi-final and the Final.
Giuseppe Bergomi was a FIFA World Cup winner just over a year after making his first appearance in the senior match. Bergomi is one of the youngest players to win the FIFA World Cup.
2. Ronaldo Nazario | 17 Years | Brazil:
Ronaldo Nazario "The Phenomenon" was a generational talent. If not for a catalog of serious knee injuries, he would probably be known as the greatest ever to play football. In 1994, a 17-year-old Ronaldo was part of the World Cup-winning Brazil team in the United States. However, he only made it to the bench and did not play a single minute. Ronaldo Nazario placed second in this list of the youngest players to win the FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo scored a staggering 115 goals in 134 games between 1994 and 1999 during two brilliant spells at Barcelona (37 goals, 34 games) and PSV (46 goals in 42 games). By 23, he had scored over 200 goals for club and country.
1. Pele | 17 Years | Brazil:
Pele is the most well-known footballer in the history of the sport and possibly the greatest attacking player of the 20th century. The Brazilian legend was just 17 years and 249 days old in 1958 when Brazil outdid Sweden by 5-2 in the final at the Rashunda Stadium in Solna, Sweden. Pele scored a brace, winning Brazil their first-ever World Cup.
Pele is the youngest player to win the FIFA World Cup on this list. Brazil’s 5-2 triumph over France in the semi-finals saw Pele become the youngest scorer of a hat-trick in World Cup history. He also won the World Cup in 1962 in Chile. Later on, he went on to claim his third World Cup trophy after eight years in Mexico. He is the only player to have won 3 World Cup trophies.

Despite a decent performance in the first half, Luciano Spaletti's men failed to keep up with the tempo in the second half.

Serie A is considering India as a potential host for the Italian Super Cup to expand the tournament's global audience, according to the league's commercial and marketing director, Michele Ciccarese.
Supercoppa Italiana, or the Italian Super Cup, takes place annually. Four teams compete for the trophy: the winners and runners-up of the previous season's Serie A and Coppa Italia.
The Italian Super Cup took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the 2024-25 season, which was also the 37th edition of this tournament. 2023-24 Serie A runners-up AC Milan defeated defendingSerie A champions Inter Milan 3-2 in the final to lift the trophy in January 2025.

According to REUTERS reports, when asked about India's potential to host the Super Cup, Ciccarese confirmed that this opportunity aligned with the league's strategy.
Ciccarese stated the following during the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit.
What we do is to bring our international trophy like the Super Cup in all over the world, for a simple reason, to engage a wider audience and bring the best of that culture,
So, that's exactly what we might do, and take the conversation forward to ... come here and play in India.
Ciccarese suggested that the popular Indian Premier League (IPL) could help promote the country and highlight the successes of other sports, similar to the "Made in Italy" initiative.
"Made in Italy" is how we engaged with all the 20 Serie A clubs, and each club provides one of the important players to promote, not only the city, but the clubs, the territory, the production chain and everything that is around that club,
That's exactly what we are suggesting, or maybe potentially to create a cross-market activation with the IPL together in order to help grow the grassroots, to have the right presence in the 2036 Olympics for Indian football.
Ciao, Scudetto! 🤌
