The Portuguese fullback is set to become a Barcelona player on loan for one season with an option to buy clause in his contract. Cancelo fell out of favor with Pep last season and was loaned to Bayern Munich and this transfer could mean his final departure from the Etihad.

Cancelo to Barcelona (Loan)

Joao Cancelo will leave for Spain to complete his loan move from Manchester City to Barcelona and indicate his permanent exit from the Premier League side.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the deal is set in place as both the clubs have found a middle ground and reached verbal agreement on the Cancelo deal.

A season long loan move that contains an option to buy the player permanently, the fees is expected to be around €25m.

Barcelona have had a longstanding interest on Joao Cancelo since last year. Xavi was said to be admired by the player and wanted to sign him as a replacement to Sergino Dest. One of the other reasons were Kounde's unwillingness to play as a right back also played a crucial part in this transfer.

The Catalonia club couldn't buy Cancelo in the winter transfer window because of La Liga's FFP restrictions. And as a result, Cancelo went to Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich on Tuchel's request on loan only.

The loan move to Bayern Munich came as a shock to many given what a hugely important figure he was to City's title triumph in 2021-22 season. Although it was reported by many journalists that Cancelo fell out of Pep's favours when he argued about his decreased game time after the 2022 World Cup.

His transfer to Bayern Munich didn't affect City at all as they went on to win the treble but it was made very clear that Cancelo wouldn't be part of Pep's plans in the upcoming season. And the Barcelona transfer made it pretty clear.

Bayern Munich also had an option to buy the right back permanently which they didn't avail. It was suggested by many that Arsenal would go for Cancelo in this year's transfer window but unfortunately that didn't happen as they set their eyes on other targets. But now these things doesn't matter as he's going to Camp Nou to play for Barcelona.
