Manchester City were never considered as the rivals of Liverpool FC before the 2008 when the Abu Dhabi United Group takeover happened. The Abu Dhabi United Group reconstructed the City team and since then City have been able to go shoulder-to-shoulder against the big boys of the English football club. The actual Liverpool vs Man City rivalry began in the 2013-14 season as Manchester United, who were considered the greatest rivals of Liverpool started going down the hill after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and City took the lead against Liverpool and won the league.

The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester City is often attributed to their respective managers, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. This rivalry was formed during their time managing Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, respectively, in Germany. They faced off against each other eight times in less than two years, including three cup finals, with each winning four matches. Klopp arrived at Liverpool in 2015, while Guardiola joined City a year later. In the 2017-18 season, Liverpool won 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The 2018-19 season saw a close title race, with City winning by just one point and achieving an unprecedented 'domestic treble'. Liverpool won the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season, with City finishing second.

In the 2020-21 season, City comfortably won the league title, while Liverpool struggled with injuries. In the 2021-22 season, Liverpool and City were involved in another close title race, with City winning dramatically on the final day. Liverpool won the League Cup and FA Cup and reached the Champions League final.
