Mohun Bagan Super Giant will travel to Bangladesh to face Bashundhara Kings in the AFC Cup group game on Tuesday, 7 November. The Mariners were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture and will aim to get the win over the Bangladeshi giants to take a step closer to winning their group. This is the first away International tour for Mohun Bagan and it will be an interesting match-up as both teams are on a brilliant run.
Mohun Bagan's new signing Anirudh Thapa has been excellent since his arrival. SportzPoint was lucky to get some exclusive moments with the Central Midfielder ahead of the big clash.
This is the first away International tour of Moon Bagan. So how the Mohun Bagan players are practicing for the hurdle?
"Obviously, it has been fantastic, you know. It's difficult to travel and less away game and obviously, they are a good team that, you know, they have a good support as well," Anirudh Thapa said in an exclusive interview with SportzPoint.
Basundhara are unbeaten at home and after the 2-2 draw in the first fixture, it will be surely one of the most watched match-ups in the AFC as well.
"Like I said, they are a good side and now you said, you know, they are unbeaten and they have a good fan base as well. So, I think it will be a tough game and we need to be on our toes," Anirudh shared his thoughts about the huge clash.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant signed Sadiku, Cummings, and Thapa before the start of this season and since then, they have been performing on different levels. The Indian central midfielder, Anirudh had previously played for Chennaiyan FC since 2016. Playing for Mohun Bagan, which is arguably the biggest club of India, is a huge thing in itself. So, what did it mean for Anirudh, to join this club?
"Obviously, it meant, you know, the world to me because, you know, in India, it's one of the best clubs in football. So it was a big thing, you know, it was just a dream to play for and such a great history, such great fan base. And now we are representing India in the AC Cup. So I think it means a lot and that's what, you know, players are ready for you to do what they are and all we can do and we will do, you know, to give our best for the team and the fans," he said.
"I think it depends, you know, on the coach, plus on the teams. But for me, I'm here to help the team and improve my game as well. You know, playing with certain good players and such a good coach and such amazing staff members. I think I'm growing and it is just helping my last one," Thapa explained.
"I think, you know, the message will be simple, you know, to support us, we have seen you guys supporting us immensely and creating an electrifying atmosphere wherever we go and tomorrow as well, we need your support, we need your love and we will play for you guys," Anirudh Thapa concluded.
