Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min's brace earned his side a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates in the Premier League as the visitors twice came from behind in the first London Derby on Sunday. Cristian Romero's own goal after 26 minutes handed Arsenal the lead, but Son equalised shortly before halftime as the visitors grew into the game. Romero then conceded a penalty that was converted by Bukayo Saka in the 54th minute but Tottenham scored back almost immediately as Son punished a terrible mistake by Arsenal substitute Jorginho. Premier League 2023-24: Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur - Match Report
First Half:
Arsenal pressed right from the start and they soon got the upper hand. Although Son found the net from an obvious offside position, Arsenal began creating chances and a superb reaction stop from Guglielmo Vicario prevented Gabriel Jesus from firing home a Saka cross. The pressure soon paid off as Arsenal took the lead in the 26 minutes.
The move began when Oleksandr Zinchenko broke up a Spurs attack on the left and charged forward before finding Martin Odegaard who switched the ball to Saka on the right. He cut inside and took aim, and his curler diverted into his own goal by Romero.
Spurs were shocked and were being forced into making mistakes all over the pitch. Arsenal could have extended their lead six minutes later but Gabriel Jesus blazed a golden chance over the bar. Spurs capitalised on their opportunity and scored their equaliser.
David Raya couldn't quite keep his sheet clean when the Spurs did find the net. The Spaniard did well to prevent a looping cross from sneaking under his crossbar and then denied Johnson again from close range, but a weak clearance led to Maddison escaping from Saka, and Son sneaked in between three defenders to divert the cutback into the far corner to score a brilliant goal. The first half ended 1-1 as the North London Derby was looking alive again.
Second Half:
The second half was a nail-biting one. Saka's corner dropped in the box, and Ben White saw a shot on the turn blocked by Romero's arm. After a lengthy VAR check, a record 25th penalty in this fixture in the Premier League was awarded. Saka scored from the spot to put Arsenal back in front.
The lead was wiped out just 98 seconds later when half-time introduction Jorginho was caught on the ball by Maddison who broke through and slipped a pass into Son who went past Raya and put his team level for the second time.
Arsenal nearly nicked it when a corner reached Saka on the edge of the box. Vicario managed to push Saka's effort around his post. In the final seconds, Kulusevski teed up Richarlison who saw his attempt deflect just wide of the target, as both teams had to settle for a draw.
