Spain vs Germany: 2022 World Cup, Group Stage Match Preview and Dream11 Predictions

Two European heavyweights who kicked off their 2022 World Cup campaigns in contrasting fashion lock horns at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday, as high-flying Spain take on an out-of-sorts Germany outfit.

Spain vs Germany on Sunday night in a mouthwatering group stage game between two former World Cup champions.

Match Details:

  • Location: Al Kohr, Qatar
  • Stadium: Al Bayt Stadium
  • Date: Sunday 28 November
  • Kick-off Time: 12:30 AM IST
  • Watch: Sports 18/HD, Jio Cinema App

Spain vs Germany: Match Preview:

Spain can send shudders around the rest of the World Cup competition if they build on their 7-0 win over Costa Rica and beat Germany.

— Selección Española de Fútbol (@SEFutbol) November 26, 2022

Luis Enrique's side were as impressive as Costa Rica were poor in their opening Group E match, running riot with seven goals en route to the country's record World Cup win, Ferran Torres netting a brace with Dani Olmo, Gavi, Marco Asensio, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata all chipping in with goals.

Germany began the tournament in contrasting fashion, falling to an embarassing 2-1 defeat to Japan – despite having led through Ilkay Gundogan's penalty – and are now facing a second group stage exit in successive World Cups.

— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) November 25, 2022

This game has been billed as the highlight of the whole group stage so far, and there's plenty riding on it for both teams.

Team News:

Spain:

A bout of flu had peppered the Spanish squad ahead of their stroll against Costa Rica. Both Alvaro Morata and Dani Carvajal missed training due to illness but the pair made it onto the bench, with Morata notching Spain's seventh of the afternoon as a substitute.

— Selección Española de Fútbol (@SEFutbol) November 25, 2022

Luis Enrique made all five of his allotted changes with more than 20 minutes left to play, resting half of his outfield starters perhaps with Sunday in mind – though trying to second-guess Enrique is a thankless task.

Germany:

Leroy Sane was the only member of Hansi Flick's squad that didn't make the bench against Japan while he nursed a knee injury. The Bayern Munich wide man has been limited to individual training and his involvement this weekend is mired in uncertainty.

— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) November 25, 2022

Spain vs Germany: Head to Head:

Germany have a slight edge over Spain and have won nine out of the 25 matches played between the two teams, as opposed to Spain's eight victories. Spain have played against Germany on four occasions in the World Cup.

— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) November 24, 2022

Their previous meeting in the competition in 2010 saw Spain secure a 1-0 semi-final victory and eventually lift the trophy.

Germany have won only one of their last seven matches against Spain in all competitions, with their previous victory against La Furia Roja coming by a 1-0 scoreline in 2014.

Predicted Line-ups:

Spain Starting 11 (4-3-3): Simon; Carvajal, Laporte, P Torres, Alba; Pedri, Busquets, Gavi; F Torres, Asensio, Olmo.
Bench: Sanchez, Raya, Azpilicueta, Garcia, Guillamon, Llorente, Koke, Rodri, Soler, Morata, Williams, Pino, Sarabia, Fati, Balde.

— Selección Española de Fútbol (@SEFutbol) November 25, 2022

Germany Starting 11 (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Kehrer, Rudiger, Schlotterbeck, Raum; Gundogan, Kimmich; Gnabry, Muller, Musiala; Havertz.
Bench: Ter Stegen, Trapp, Bella-Kotchap, Ginter, Sule, Klostermann, Goretzka, Brandt, Gotze, Adeyemi, Hofmann, Fullkrug, Moukoko.

First leg story | Italy 1-2 Germany

Germany stamps a brilliant comeback win to beat Italy 2-1 in their own backyard at San Siro.

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring with a powerful strike, only nine minutes into the game. The Azzuris kept the lead until the break, as Tim Kleindienst slotted home a header in the 49th minute, only after coming off the bench at half-time. Leon Goretzka netted the winner in the 76th minute, handing Germany a one-goal cushion ahead of the second leg next week.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann's pin-point substitutions worked well for Germany, whereas skipper Joshua Kimmich put up a masterful performance, providing assists for both goals.

Despite a decent performance in the first half, Luciano Spaletti's men failed to keep up with the tempo in the second half.

Final Verdict

Netherlands vs Spain UEFA Nations League 2025 Quarter-finals 1st leg: Merino's injury time goal helps Sapin draw 2-2 against 10 men Dutch team | sportzpoint.com

Not many people saw this coming—hardly anyone pegged the Dutch to come out on top before the match kicked off. However, Koeman’s men came so close to earning every bit of a well-deserved victory.

They started off a little wobbly, sure, but soon found their rhythm, moving the ball with confidence. Gakpo and Frimpong were electric out wide, constantly throwing the Spanish defense off balance, while the backline held strong—almost to the very end—until Merino slipped one through.

What a ride it’s been! That’s all from us on this live blog—thanks for sticking with us through every twist and turn. Good night. See you on Sunday for the second leg.

Full-time | Italy 1-2 Germany

Germany will welcome Italy at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund for the second-leg encounter on March 24th.
