The 2021/22 season was a thrill ride in many ways. Europe's Top 5 football league has produced some world-class football over the course of the season with breakout performances and upsets all over the calendar.

Today we take a look at the teams that were crowned Champions of their league and nation last season. Here is the list of winners of Europe's Top 5 football league last season:

Premier League Winner: Manchester City

Manchester City wins 2021/22 Premier League title after thrilling final day for the ages; City's fourth title in five years under Pep Guardiola; City secure Premier League glory to end Liverpool's Quadruple hopes.

City, who knew a victory would secure them the title, were 2-0 down to Aston Villa with just 15 minutes remaining, but turned the game around with three goals in five minutes to win 3-2 in thrilling scenes to rival the famous 2012 Premier League title victory.

Liverpool were 3-1 winners against Wolves, but fell short by just a point after a stunning 38-game duel, ending their Quadruple hopes.

City have now won four Premier League titles and eight major trophies under Pep Guardiola since his arrival in the summer of 2016.

La Liga Winner: Real Madrid:

For the record-extending 35th time, Spanish giants Real Madrid has been crowned the La Liga champion. The Los Blancos retain the title following a comprehensive 4-0 win over 13th-placed Espanyol at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.

The Madrid fans celebrated all over social media as Carlo Ancelotti and his boys wrap things up with four games to go.

The victory also was a record-breaking feat for Madrid head coach Ancelotti. He has become the first manager to win a title across the top five leagues in Europe, thus completing his Grand Slam.

It is his second stint with Los Blancos and the first La Liga crown with the side, having won the UEFA Champions League (UCL) in 2013-14, besides winning four other titles.

On the other hand, Madrid defender Marcelo has become the most successful player for the club. He has now won 24 titles with the side, the most by any player in the club's history.

Serie A Winner: AC Milan:

AC Milan have won the 2021-22 Serie A title, with arch-rivals Inter finishing second after a dramatic final day. Milan needed to win at Sassuolo in order to secure a first Scudetto since 2011, and they showed no nerves as they raced into a 3-0 lead after only 36 minutes.

Stafano Pioli's men coasted to victory to earn their first title for 11 years, rendering Inter's own 3-0 victory, at home to Sampdoria, ultimately irrelevant.

It has been a tough 11 years since Milan last won the title, with the club suffering financial crisis off the pitch and a fall from grace on it.

They fell into mid-table, finishing as low as 10th in the 2014-15 season, and were absent from European competition for a number of seasons.

However, they have been returning to their former strength under Pioli, playing in the Champions League for the first time since 2013-14 in this campaign, and have now earned a 19th Serie A crown.

They have been helped back to the top by a mix of youth and experience, with exciting talents like Mike Maignan, Fikayo Tomori and Sandro Tonali paired with seasoned campaigners such as Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Bundesliga Winner: Bayern Munich:

Bayern wrapped up the 2021/22 title with three games to spare after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in Der Klassiker, thanks to goals from Serge Gnabry, Robert Lewandowski and Jamal Musiala.

Lewandowski had yet another scintillating campaign with the Bavarians in Bundesliga 2021-22.He netted 35 goals along with four assists across 34 appearances. He finished as the highest goal-scorer.

As per Opta, it is the seventh time the Pole finished as the leading goal-scorer in Bundesliga, equaling Gerd Muller's record. Thomas Muller was highly enthralling, having managed eight goals and a league-best 18 assists.

Bayern played 34 league games, winning 24, drawing five, and losing five times. They forwarded a league-high 97 goals and concede just 37. Overall, Bayern amassed 77 points. Borussia Dortmund finished second with 69 points. Bayer Leverkusen (64) and RB Leipzig (58) followed suit.

As per Opta, Bayern Munich have scored 49 away goals in Bundesliga in 2021-22. With that, they have set a record for most away goals by any side in a single season in the division.

Ligue 1 Winner: Paris Saint-Germain:

Mauricio Pochettino's side have regained the top-flight crown in France after Lille's triumph in the 2020-21 season.

Paris Saint-Germain have won the Ligue 1 title following 1-1 draw with Lens, with Lionel Messi smashing a memorable goal on the way to lifting his first trophy in France since joining the club on a free transfer.

Mauricio Pochettino's side secured the trophy with four matches to spare as they wrestled the title back from Lille following their surprise triumph in the 2020-21 campaign.

The trophy was ultimately clinched with ease, though their latest Ligue 1 victory could not avoid boos and jeers from the Parc des Princes crowd after a less than convincing performance.

PSG have won the title back from Lille by picking up 24 victories in 34 games, while also recording just six draws and four defeats.

With Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar leading the line, the Parisians unsurprisingly have the best attack in the division with 76 goals scored as they've stormed 15 points clear of second-placed Marseille.

Costa played for Atletico Madrid on a few different occasions. He had already left once before coming back in 2010 by the time he moved to Chelsea in 2014, and four years later, he was back, with Atletico Madrid paying €57 million for him.

Barcelona had seen enough from Suarez in just two and a half seasons at Liverpool to sign him for an initially reported fee of £75million. That he’d move onto bigger things was unsurprising after notching 31 goals and 13 assists in his final season in the Premier League.

5. Julian Alvarez | Manchester City to Atletico Madrid | €80 million:

One of the most recent players to the biggest football transfers from the Premier League to La Liga, Julian Alvarez moved to Manchester City for Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window of the 2024 season. He already has 23 goals and five assists this season, including eight direct goal contributions in the Champions League. So far, the move looks a positive one for Alvarez.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo | Manchester United to Real Madrid | €80 million:

Cristiano Ronaldo was undoubtedly the best move from the Premier League to La Liga in history. He broke new ground with a transfer worth approximately £80million from Manchester United. The previous world-record transfer was Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid, which had stood for eight years.

The biggest football transfer from the Premier League to La Liga, Barcelona spent an astonishing £142million to sign the midfielder from Liverpool. At Liverpool, he had become an iconic figure, having a direct hand in 97 goals in 201 games.

 After 13 direct goal contributions in his first 18 La Liga games, Coutinho slowed with only seven contributions in the 32 games he played in the season. The Brazilian left for Aston Villa, after only 39 goal contributions in 106 games at Barcelona.

His goals were more than enough to declare him a Ballon d'Or winner, but he was overshadowed by Karim Benzema in that season. 

In the 2020-21 season, Robert Lewandowski won his first Golden Shoe Award. In that season Robert Lewandowski and his company won a treble for Bayern Munich under Julian Nagelsmann, but he failed to win the Ballon d'Or award as Lionel Messi won the Copa America.

Ciro Immobile | 2019-20 | Lazio:

Immobile scored 36 league goals for Lazio in 2019-20 to win the prestigious individual award and cemented his name among the top players to win the European Golden Shoe winners list. Despite scoring 36 league goals for Lazio but did not get the chance to claim a Ballon d’Or rank as the award was cancelled that year due to Covid.

Lionel Messi | 2018-19, 2017-18, and 2016-17 | FC Barcelona:

Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski are the only players to crave their names multiple times in the European Golden Shoe winners list. In the 2018-19 season, Messi became the last player to win the Golden Shoe and Ballon d'Or in one season. Messi was the only player, who was dragging Ernesto Valverde's managed Barcelona side to the treble and scored 36 goals.

In the 2017-18 season, Messi scored 34 league goals and won his second European Golden Shoe, despite delivering a stinker performance in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the 2016-17 season, Messi scored more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the Ballon d'Or that season, but Messi won the European Golden Shoe and became the first player to win the Golden Shoe thrice in the list.

Luis Suarez | 2015-16 | FC Barcelona:

Luis Suarez was a goalscoring machine in 2015-16, as he even managed to outgun the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. The Uruguayan scored 40 goals in La Liga alone, and he became the one and only player to win an individual award in Messi and Ronaldo's era. His goalscoring prowess is the reason, he is on the European Golden Shoe winners list. 

Cristiano Ronaldo | 2014-15 | Real Madrid:

Surprisingly, 2014-15 was the last time that Ronaldo ever won the European Golden Shoe. He enjoyed an excellent individual season, scoring 48 league goals for Real Madrid, but was ultimately overshadowed by Barcelona and Messi who won the treble that year. His excellent goal-scoring skills are the reason he is on the European Golden Shoe winners list.

UEFA has assigned an Ethics and disciplinary inspector to the actions of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Ceballos after Real Madrid's dramatic win in the penalty shoot-out over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match on March 12.

One of the incidents being examined is a gesture of Antonio Rudiger's cut-throat celebrations towards the Atletico Madrid's fan base. Meanwhile, some video footage is circulating on social media, showing that Mbappe is making a gesture of groin-squeezing during the triumph celebrations. If the investigations lead to charges and a guilty sentence, the players could face disciplinary actions in the form of suspension, fines, or both.

A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández, and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025.

What would Real Madrid's planning be?

Real Madrid will eagerly await UEFA's final statement, as a ban for Vinicius, Rudiger, Ceballos, and Mbappe could significantly impact their preparations for the tie against Arteta. They will face the Gunners on April 8 in the Emirates Stadium, with the return fixture a week later in Santiago Bernabeu.

Previous Incidents:

An example of similar behavior in the past led to financial fines and suspensions, setting an example that could influence UEFA’s decision on the current case.  Last summer, during Euro 2024, England midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined 30,000 euros and handed a one-match suspended ban for a groin-squeezing gesture after scoring a late equalizer in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia in the tournament’s Round of 16.

Another example occurred in 2019 when Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone received a 20,000 euro fine for a similar act after his team scored against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

Why Carlo Ancelotti?

CBF president Ednaldo Rodriguez, recently re-elected, had previously identified Carlo Ancelotti as his managerial target in 2023, with Pep Guardiola also considered before the contract extension with Manchester City. However, the Italian has indicated that any discussions would only advance after the FIFA Club World Cup, which Real Madrid will participate in between June and July in the United States of America.

Ancelotti's contract details with Madrid:

Carlo Ancelotti remains under contract with Real Madrid until 2026, and if he secures major silverware, such as Laliga, UEFA Champions League, or the FIFA Club World Cup, club president Florentino Perez is expected to keep him in charge. 

The Italian has previously stated that he would never willingly leave Real Madrid, but should the club end the season trophyless. Brazil may see an opportunity to attract him away. With Carlo Ancelotti's availability uncertain, the CBF is also considering other potential options. 

Among the names being considered is Filipe Luiz, the former Atletico Madrid defender and current Flamengo coach.

Next for Brazil:

Brazil has its next set of FIFA World Cup qualifiers in early June, playing Ecuador away and Paraguay at home. The CBF must now determine whether to keep Dorival Junior until then or appoint an interim manager while negotiations with current Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti continue behind the scenes. 

Trent Alexander-Arnold could be set to join Real Madrid with reports suggesting that the Liverpool defender has finally agreed to move. Alexander-Arnold has been Real Madrid's biggest transfer target over the past few years. After Kylian Mbappe's move to Real Madrid, Los Blancos boss Florentino Perez's main target was Trent. However, over the past few years, Trent declined all the Los Blancos offers.

According to reports from Caught Offside, Los Blancos has finally secured the signing of the English Full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. According to the reports, Trent will join Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. Real Madrid has been working on this scene for over two years, and finally, Trent declined Liverpool's every offer and wants to join Real Madrid.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this January with Los Blancos keen on restricting a deal despite being able to join as a free agent in the summer. Moreover, Trent wants to stay at Liverpool this season and now he has struck a verbal agreement with Los Blancos' boss Carlo Ancelotti (according to Marca). But it remains unclear whether the agreement means the deal will go through this month.

Liverpool already rejected a bid from Real Madrid in this winter transfer window. Although Liverpool and Real Madrid's management have remained quiet about this deal, it is looking like Trent wants to finish this season as a Liverpool player before waving goodbye to the Reds.
