Wrestlers' protest: Sakshi Malik wants to give statement in front of magistrate

Wrestler Sakshi Malik, sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar, has made a fresh allegation against the Delhi Police. The Olympic medalist says that the police didn't recorded her statements against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Singh in a legal manner. Sakshi Malik made this statement while talking to the media on Saturday.

Sakshi Malik said, "We have discussed with our lawyers. Our statements have not been recorded under (section) 164 (Criminal Code of Procedure) and we are waiting for this. And the police have been given a deadline to ensure that the statements are recorded within this deadline. My request is to record our statements as soon as possible because only then can the case move forward."

A senior official has confirmed that the police have registered seven complaints under section 161 while the wrestlers want the registration under 164. The Delhi Police was earlier not registering FIRs but was forced to do so after the Supreme Court's order. Police registered two FIRs out of which one has been registered under POCSO Act.

Vinesh Phogat told that Khap Panchayats will reach Jantar Mantar on Sunday to support. She said, "Tomorrow, a lot of people are expected to join us from villages, including those from khap panchayats, farmer and worker unions, student organisations… We appeal to everyone to be peaceful. Our success depends on a peaceful demonstration. We also request all who will come tomorrow to cooperate with authorities and police. We also request the police not to stop our supporters tomorrow. If police cooperate, then they will also cooperate."

Delhi Police said that 1500 to 2000 people will reach Jantar Mantar on Sunday. While Bajrang Punia also appealed to people around the country to conduct a candlelight march at 7 pm on May 7 (Sunday).

On the other hand, a day after former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said 'let them fight their battles' and that he 'didn't know what was happening' when asked about the protesting wrestlers, World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat said they were ready to enlighten him of the 'situation' if he contacts them.
