ATP Houston 2022: Nick Kyrgios losses in semifinals against Reilly Opelka, continues his outburst

Nick Kyrgios may be delving into his pockets once more after yet another of his matches was marred by ongoing arguments with the umpire. The Australian reached the semi-finals of the US men's clay-court tournament in Houston. There he was defeated 6-3 7-5 by Reilly Opelka.

Nick Kyrgios verbally attacked the Umpire

The behaviour of the 26-year-old, who was fined a point for a second audible obscenity at a vital point in the second set, overshadowed an otherwise tight match. Kyrgios was irritated by an apparent blunder by umpire Joshua Brace. The Umpire missed declaring an Opelka shot out with the score at 5-5 and 30-15.

He then had a nervous breakdown at 30-30. He made a foolish blunder on the next point before being fined a point after his second warning for harsh language on the court. It means he fell behind 6-5. Afterwards, Opelka came back to win the match and set up a championship match with John Isner. But during the final changeover, Nick Kyrgios had continued to vent his anger. He screamed "F***!" as he walked back to his seat. Once sitting down, he then verbally attacked the official again.

After the ATP elected to punish him for four separate offences, the Australian Open doubles champion was fined a total of £26,635 for his behaviour in the match. Another flashpoint occurred in March during the Indian Wells Masters.

Following an incident in which he nearly smacked a ball boy with his racket after smashing it into the floor, he was charged £19,028. Since 2015, Kyrgios has been fined at a total of 16 different occasions.

"Heartbroken about the U.S. Open. Will be back ... My wrist is not ready yet to compete," Kyrgios, who has played only one ATP match all season, wrote on Instagram.

The US Tennis Association announced Kyrgios' withdrawal along with Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. The association has not gave specific reason immediately for his absence. The US Open 2023 starts on 28 August. The brackets will be determined on Aug. 24.

At the U.S. Open a year ago, Kyrgios made his deepest run at Flushing Meadows by making it to the quarterfinals. He eliminated reigning champion and No. 1-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round, before losing in five sets to Karen Khachanov.

Nick Kyrgios has only played one official singles match all season, in Stuttgart, Germany, in June, which he lost. Shortly thereafter, he withdrew from Wimbledon 2023, citing a wrist injury. Earlier, the 28-year-old had missed the Australian Open in early 2023 due to a left knee injury, after which he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. After that, he also missed the French Open. Kyrgios's ATP ranking has declined due to his continuous absence from tennis and he is currently holding No. 92 ranking.

Hours before Kyrgios withdrew from Wimbledon in early July, he was asked at a pre-tournament news conference whether he missed tennis during all of the time away. It was at the All England Club in 2022 that Kyrgios turned in his best run at one of the sport's four most important events, finishing as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic. Meanwhile, two Argentine players Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman can replace him in the US Open 2023.

Nick Kyrgios announced his withdrawal from the prestigious Grand Slam tournament on social media.
In a statement on Sunday, Kyrgios said, "I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon."

Nick Kyrgios was runner-up at Wimbledon last year. This year he has missed two major Grand Slam events, the Australian Open and the French Open, due to injuries. In addition, he missed his home Grand Slam earlier this year due to a knee injury in January. Nick Kyrgios didn't play the French Open from May to June this year due to a foot injury.

"I still think there's some question marks, for sure. I look at my preparations last year coming in — I probably had the most ideal preparation possible. It couldn't be any (more) different this year. I've been hitting with some really good players this week and my body is feeling OK. I'm going to take it one day at a time. I'm just going to try to do everything I can, prepare, go out there and play some good tennis." Nick Kyrgios further added.

Nick Kyrgios' not playing in the Australian Open 2023 is a big blow for him. Because as a host, his chances of winning in this tournament were high. After 1976, no player from Australia has won this tournament. Talking about Wimbledon last year, he has been the runner-up. Novak Djokovic defeated Kyrgios in that match 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 7–6 (7–3).

Kyrgios was seeded 19th in Melbourne and was scheduled to face Roman Safiullin in the first round on Tuesday. He announced this just a day before his first match. When Nick was sharing this information, he was accompanied by his physiotherapist Will Maher. He said "I'm just exhausted from everything. Obviously pretty brutal," Kyrgios explained of the decision to pull out. "One of the most important tournaments of my career. Hasn't been easy at all."

"Obviously last year winning the title in doubles and playing the best tennis of my life probably. Then going into this event as one of the favorites, it's brutal."

Kyrgios added.

Kyrgios is as mercurial a character as there is in tennis, known for alternating sometimes-brilliant and sometimes-uninterested play, as well as mixing in the occasional outlandish outburst during matches. He has spoken frankly about dealing with mental health issues. Kyrgios also has been facing a charge of assault in a pending court case in his hometown of Canberra.

Maher said that an MRI exam after Kyrgios felt discomfort in his knee revealed a cyst and a small tear in the lateral meniscus ligament. The trainer said the problem is "not career-threatening," and that Kyrgios should be able to return to competition by the hard-court tournament at Indian Wells, California, in March.

In tennis, the serve is the biggest weapon for players. A good tennis serve uses a combination of power and precision. If a tennis player serves fast, it makes the game seem a lot easier than it is. The serve is one of the most difficult shots for a novice, but once mastered it can be a considerable advantage. Advanced players can hit the serve in many different ways and often use it as an offensive weapon to gain an advantage in the point or to win it outright. Because of this, players above the beginner level are expected to win most of their service games, and the ability to break an opponent's serve plays a crucial role in a match

The average speed of a first serve in tennis is usually around the 190-200 km/h or 120 mph mark in men's professional tennis and around the 170-180 km/h or 105 mph mark in women's professional tennis. The fastest tennis serves (men) in Us Open 2022 till now was hit by a Russian-Kazakhstani tennis player Alexander Bublik, clocking in at 141 mph. While in women's tennis, an American tennis player Coco Gauff hit the fastest serves at 128 mph.
