Sumit Nagal is the first Indian men's player since 2013 to reach the second round of singles. Somdev Devvarman made it to the second round in 2013. For the first time since 1989, an Indian player has defeated a seeded player in a singles match at the Australian Open. Ramesh Krishnan did this in 1989. Then he defeated Mats Wilander of Sweden in the second round. Wilander was then the top player in the world in tennis rankings.

Moreover, Sumit Nagal has won the main round of a Grand Slam for the second time. Earlier in the 2020 US Open, he was successful in winning a match in the main draw. He has defeated a player ranked in the top 100 in tennis rankings for the seventh time. At the same time, this is Sumit's second big win in terms of the ranking of the opposition player.

Sumit Nagal made a great start and dominated from the first set itself. He broke Alexander's serve three times and won the first set easily by a margin of 6-4. Sumit Nagal looked in even better form in the second set. Alexander Bublik also made some mistakes and taking advantage of this, Nagal won the second set by a margin of 6-2. There was a close contest between the two players in the third set and Nagal won in the tiebreak. He won this set 7-6 and also won the match.
