The message includes allegations of sexual assault and it states that it "is not true". A part of the message also says that "I'm not missing, nor am I unsafe. I've just been resting at home and everything is fine." NHK World reported the above fact. A Chinese state-run media outlet released this email and claimed that Peng Shuai wrote it.

NHK World reported that in correspondence to this, the WTA chairman and CEO Steve Simon released a statement. According to him the email released by the Chinese state media "only raises my concerns as to her safety and whereabouts."
