Carlos Alcarz vs Daniil Medvedev

World No. 1 Alcaraz reached the semi-finals by defeating Alexander Zverev in the men's singles quarterfinals on Thursday. Defending champion Alcaraz will square off against World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the US Open 2023.

Alcaraz leads Medvedev 2-1 in the head-to-head. The Spaniard won their most recent encounter at the 2023 Wimbledon in straight sets. Alcaraz and Medvedev have faced off twice this season, with the former winning in straight sets on both occasions. On the first occasion, the Spaniard snapped the Russian's 19 match winning streak in the final of the Indian Wells Masters. More recently, Alcaraz defeated Medvedev in the semifinals of Wimbledon en route to winning the title. The two of them have captured the title in New York over the last couple of years. This match could be more competitive than their previous meetings, but the outcome is likely to be the same, with Alcaraz coming out on top.

Novak Djokovic vs Ben Shelton

Meanwhile, Serbia's Novak Djokovic registered a one-sided victory over American player Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals and made it to the US Open 2023 semi-finals. He won the match 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 and took his record against Fritz to 8-0 in the ATP head-to-head series. Moreover, the Serbian surpassed Roger Federer's 46 to set a men's record of 47 Grand Slam semi-finals appearances in the Open Era. Djokovic will play the US Open 2023 semifinal against Ben Shelton, who created history at Flushing Meadows by defeating his countryman Frances Tiafoe in quarter-final. Shelton became the youngest American to reach the US Open 2023 semi-finals since Michael Chang in 1992. He needs just one more win to reach her first Grand Slam final.

Djokovic has a 30-0 record against Americans since his loss to Sam Querrey in the third round of Wimbledon in 2016. This will be the first time Djokovic and Shelton will face each other. Shelton has a big serve but the youngster will need much more than that to trouble Djokovic, one of the best returners in the sport.

US Open 2025: Coco Gauff vs Ajla Tomljanović women's singles first round match preview

Former champion Coco Gauff opens her US Open 2025 campaign against Ajla Tomljanović on Tuesday.

For Gauff, the build-up has been far from ideal. Since lifting her second Grand Slam crown at Roland-Garros in June, the American has endured a rocky spell, going title-less on grass and falling short in the North American hard-court swing.

Tomljanović, on the other hand, has endured a stop-start season. Aside from semifinal runs in Austin and Rabat, plus a third-round showing in Charleston, her campaign has largely lacked momentum. Consecutive second-round exits in Monterrey and Cincinnati have done little to shift that narrative, leaving the Australian searching for a spark in New York.

Here is everything you need to know before the Coco Gauff vs Ajla Tomljanović women's singles first round encounter in US Open 2025.

Coco Gauff vs Ajla Tomljanović: Head-to-head Stats

Gauff leads their rivalry 1-0. She won their previous meeting at the Paris Olympics 2024 in straight sets.

2024 Paris Olympics Clay First round Coco Gauff 6-3 6-0

Coco Gauff Current Form

Gauff started the season by leading her team to the United Cup title, followed by a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open. She failed to win a match during the Middle East swing, and then made the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami.

Gauff put her best foot forward during the clay swing. After back-to-back runner-up finishes at the WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome, she captured her second Major title at the French Open. She rallied from a set down to beat World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

The American's form nosedived following her triumph in Paris. She didn't win a match on grass, eventually snapping her losing skid by making the fourth round of the Canadian Open. She went one round further at the Cincinnati Open, her most recent tournament.

Ajla Tomljanović Current Form

Semifinal appearances at the WTA 250 tournaments in Austin and Rabat are Tomljanovic's best results this year. She has underperformed at the Majors, reaching the second round of the Australian Open and the French Open while making a first-round exit from Wimbledon.

Tomljanovic's preparations for the US Open got underway at the Canadian Open, going down to Anastasija Sevastova in the first round. She then made the second rounds of the Cincinnati Open and the Monterrey Open.

Coco Gauff vs Ajla Tomljanović: Match Prediction

Coco Gauff to win in straight sets. Gauff has a 4-4 record since winning the French Open. She has compiled a 4-2 record in the lead-up to the US Open. Her overall record for the season currently stands at 35-12. She captured her maiden Major title in New York two years ago and lost in the fourth round last year as the defending champion. She has a 17-5 record at the tournament and has lost in the first round just once.

Tomljanovic isn't in great form either, having won only two of her last eight main draw matches. She's a former quarterfinalist at the US Open, reaching the last eight in 2022. She also beat Serena Williams in the final match of her career en route to the quarterfinals here.

Gauff has recently been dealing with some service woes, hitting plenty of double faults in every match. She hired a biomechanics expert a few days ago, the same one who fixed Sabalenka's serve when she was going through her yips in 2022.

Another poor service performance could prove to be detrimental for Gauff. However, Tomljanovic hasn't beaten a top 10 player since August 2022, thus giving the American some room to recover even if she isn't at her best.

Third seed Alexander Zverev will take on Alejandro Tabilo in the first round of the US Open 2025

Following his runner-up finish to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, Zverev's form took a hit. He eventually wrapped up the initial hardcourt swing with a fourth-round finish at the Miami Open. The clay swing started on a disappointing note for him, failing to win a match at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Tabilo, on the other hand, lost his first six matches of the season. He snapped his losing skid by making the second round at Indian Wells, and he did the same in Miami. He won back-to-back matches for the first time at the Monte-Carlo Masters, including an upset win over Novak Djokovic.

Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Tabilo: Head-to-head Stats

Alexander Zverev leads their rivalry 1-0. He won their previous meeting at the Italian Open 2024 in three sets.

Year

2024 Italian Open Clay SF Zverev 1-6 7-6 6-2

Alexander Zverev Current Form

Alexander Zverev has been one of the most consistent performers in Grand Slams in recent years, although that consistency has not yet translated into the elusive maiden Slam title he has long been chasing.

Zverev achieved seven consecutive second-week appearances in Grand Slams starting with the US Open 2023, but that streak came to an end at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, where he was defeated in the first round by Arthur Rinderknech in a five-set match.

He has never suffered back-to-back first-round exits in Slams and will be aiming to maintain that streak when he faces Alejandro Tabilo in the first round at the US Open this Tuesday.

Alejandro Tabilo Current Form

Alejandro Tabilo has struggled with form and fitness issues, which have affected both his performance and results, causing a drop from his top-20 ranking in 2024 to outside the top 100.

Tabilo took some time off the tour and returned only during the US Open series last month, but he has struggled in every match since. His most recent match ended in a loss to a non-top-500 player, Dhakshineswar Suresh, in the Winston-Salem qualifiers.

Tabilo has never faced a top-10 player in a Grand Slam, reflecting his tendency to exit early at this stage. In 2025, he has won only one match in Slams, defeating Roberto Carballes Baena at the Australian Open.

Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Tabilo: Match Prediction

Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets. Zverev has weathered some ups and downs this year, though he seems to be in good form heading into the US Open. He has a 19-6 record on hardcourts this year, with eight of those wins coming in the lead-up to the season's final Major. He's a former finalist here, going down to Dominic Thiem in the 2020 final.

Tabilo won a couple of titles last year but has struggled to string together some wins this year. He has a 5-12 record for the season, with a 2-6 record on hardcourts. He was ranked in the top 25 at the start of the year and has since dropped out of the top 100.

Aside from his first-round exit on his US Open debut in 2015, Zverev has cleared the opening hurdle every year since then. Considering Tabilo's poor form, he's unlikely to snap the German's streak in New York.
