India's Rohan Bopanna and Australia's Matthew Ebden on Wednesday entered the US Open 2023 men's doubles semi-finals by defeating Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow by saving seven set points in the first set.
The sixth-seeded Indo-Australian pair beat the American pair 7-6 (10) 6-1 in the US Open 2023 quarterfinals. After that, they have reached their second straight last-four of the Grand Slam this year. Bopanna-Ebden will next face Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut of France, who beat Robert Galloway and Albano Olivetti of America.
This year has seen this Indo-Australian pairing bag titles in Doha and Indian Wells. They also reached finals in Rotterdam and Madrid. As a result, they sit third in the race for the ATP Finals, a prestigious event scheduled from November 12 to 19 in Turin, where the year's top eight pairs will compete.
The Americans had beaten top seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in the previous round to get to the US Open 2023 quarter-final.
Playing on the Grandstand court, neither team could find a break in the opening set, taking it to the tie-breaker. Bopanna and Ebden then saved seven set points before claiming the opener. They built on the momentum in the second set, breaking the opponents twice to make it to the next round.
This is the seventh men's doubles semi-final Bopanna will appear in at a Grand Slam. Moreover, this is also the first time he's made it this far at two Majors in the same year. His best result in men's doubles remains the finalist finish at the US Open in 2010. Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi reached the 2010 final.
Earlier, Bopanna and Ebden lost in the Wimbledon semi-finals to Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski. The 43-year-old Bopanna has a chance to make it to the Grand Slam men's doubles final for the second time in his career.
However, Bopanna has already lost with Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi the mixed doubles in the US Open 2023 second round.
