Led by defending Asian youth champion Vishwanath Suresh and Vanshaj, eight more Indian boxers advanced to the quarterfinals on the fifth day of the ongoing 2022 IBA Youth World Boxing Championships (Men & Women) in La Nucia, Spain.

Vishwanath (48kg) was up against Italy's Attrativo Salvatore in his pre-quarterfinal bout. Vishwanath, the Chennai boy, put in a brilliant performance and showed off his smart footwork and pace to win the bout 5-0.

On the other hand, Sonipat's Vanshaj (63.5kg) takes on Spain's Kakulov Enrique in a round-of-16 match. The Indian boxer displayed his strength and technical superiority to outclass his opponent 5-0 and progress to the next round.

Jadumani Singh (51kg), Ashish (54kg) and Deepak (75kg) were the other three male boxers. They won their bouts unanimously and advanced to the last-8 stage. Jadumani and Ashish beat Spain's Jimenez Asier and Philippines' Pamisa Eijay while Deepak beat Argentina's Leiva Antonio.

In the women's section, Bhawna Sharma (48kg) and Asian youth champion Tamanna (50kg) won their respective bouts by RSC decision against Poland's Oliwia Zuzanna and Finland's Pia Järvinen to reach the quarterfinals.

In the 54kg pre-quarterfinal bout, Griviya Devi overcame a challenge from Romania's Ana Maria Romantov to earn a 5-0 verdict in her favour. Aman Rathode (67kg) was the lone Indian boxer to be on the losing side. He went down 2-3 in a close bout to Yousif Hussein of Iraq.

However, five Indians, including two men, will enter the last-16 on the sixth day of the Youth World Boxing Championships. In the women's section, Devika Ghorpade (52kg), Preeti Dahiya (57kg), and Mahak Sharma (66kg) will fight. In the men's section, Sahil Chauhan (71kg) and Bharat Joon (92kg) will enter the ring.
