The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be played in the month of June 2024. But preparations for the ICC tournament have started from now. All the teams have already started preparations and are gearing up to win the title. On the other hand, ICC is also continuously trying to make this tournament more exciting. ICC has implemented new rules which is set to become permanent in all ODIs and T20Is. The batting team can benefit greatly from this.

What is Stop Clock rule?

According to ICC's Stop Clock rule, in T20 and ODI cricket, sometimes after one over, the team captain and fielders take more time to bowl the next over, due to which the match does not end on time. After the end of one over in T-20 ODI cricket, the bowling team will be given only 60 seconds to start the second over. This 60 second time timer will run on the screen. The fielding captain will have to start the over from his bowler within this time limit. If there is a delay in doing so, then a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed on the fielding team.

According to this rule, if the fielding captain is not able to start the second over within 60 seconds, then the on-field umpire will warn the captain twice. But if the stop clock rule is not followed for the third time, a penalty of five runs will be imposed on the fielding team. If this happens more than once then these runs will increase further. However, if the match is stopped due to injury or DRS, this rule will not be implemented.

Under some circumstances the stop clock rule can be canceled

There are a few exceptions to this rule, and the clock, if already started, can be cancelled in certain situations.

  • When a new batsman comes to the wicket between overs.

  • During an official drinks break.

  • The umpires have approved the onfield treatment of a batsman's or fielder's injury.

The rule was used before on a trial basis

This rule was used on a trial basis from December 2023 and its results turned out to be quite good. This is the reason why ICC has decided to implement this new rule from the T20 World Cup 2024 itself.
