India triumphed over Bangladesh in the second Test at Kanpur, winning by seven wickets after a rain-marred contest saw three days of disrupted play. This win ensured India swept the two-match series 2-0, following a dominant performance in the first Test in Chennai.
On the fifth and final day, India needed just 95 runs to win, chasing Bangladesh’s second-innings total of 146. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, like his first innings, played a windy inning (51) for India. With the likes of Virat Kohli (29 of 37), India sealed a comfortable win.
Rain affecting since Day 1
Day 1 was cut short after just 35 overs due to bad weather. India won the toss and decided to field first.
Even if the rain was frowned upon, the bowlers made sure to demolish Bangladesh's batting quickly. The quick departure of both Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam carries proof of the early dominance of Indian bowlers.
Ravichandran Ashwin then dismissed skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, leaving Bangladesh at 107/3 by stumps. Mominul Haque (107 of 194 balls) tried to provide Rahim with some resistance, but India's dominance prevailed on the opening day, capitalizing on favourable bowling conditions.
Poor Drainage Disrupts Momentum in Kanpur Test Match
The Test faced significant disruptions since day 1 due to rain.
The day 3 got abandoned and not washed away due to the pitch's poor drainage and a muddy outfield. Despite no rain on Day 3, the wet conditions prevented any play, frustrating both teams.
Umpires inspected the field in hopes of resuming the match, but the soggy ground made it unsafe for play, even when the sun finally emerged.
As the situation remained unresolved, the Indian team was seen retreating to their dressing room, breaking the momentum of the match and leaving players and fans disappointed.
Jadeja- Kohli Milestone and India’s Rapid First Innings
Jadeja concluded the Bangladeshi innings, celebrating his 300th Test wicket. However, it was the rest, especially Bumrah and the newbie Akash Deep, who were right on the money since day 1. Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each, restricting Bangladesh to 233 all out in their first innings.
India responded with an aggressive batting display, declaring on 285/9 in just 34 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul led India’s charge, both scoring quick fifties.
Although Virat Kohli failed to articulate a half-century, he managed to gate his name in the elite list. Kohli became the fourth batter in the World with 27,000 runs, after Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ricket Ponting.
Jaiswal's 31-ball fifty was the fastest by an Indian opener, and despite Rohit Sharma’s early departure, India built a lead of 52 runs.
India created the record for the fatest 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 in test cricket history.
Bangladesh Collapses Under Spin Pressure
Bangladesh, trailing by 52 runs, faced an uphill battle in their second inning. On the evening of Day 4, Ashwin once again tormented the visitors, dismissing two top-order batsmen, Zakir Hasan and Hasan Mahmud. Bangladesh ended the day on 26/2, with the pitch offering a significant turn.
On Day 5, Ravindra Jadeja joined Ashwin in tearing through Bangladesh’s batting line-up. With the other spinner Jadeja and pace artist Bumrah joining in the assassination, the visitors bowled out for just 146, setting India a target of 95 runs.
India’s Comfortable Chase
India made light work of the modest target, chasing down 95 runs in just 14 overs. Similar to the previous innings, captain Rohit Sharma failed this time as well.
However, with Jaiswal with his racing bat, supported by Virat Kohli from the other side, India sealed a comfortable seat for victory over Bangladesh.
Scoring 51 runs of 45 balls, Jaiswal looked to finish with a big shot but got the ball at the cover-point failing to complete the match.
However, Rishabh Pant being Rishabh Pant smashed a bounday to Taijul Islam, winning for India by 7 wickets.
