The player with the most wickets in a single season of the IPL or WPL wins the Purple Cap award. This award has been given to the highest wicket-taking bowlers since the first season of the IPL (2008).

The first edition of the Women's Premier League (2023) also decided to present the Purple Cap as an award to the highest wicket-taker in the 22-match tournament, and the Mumbai Indians' bowler Hayley Matthews became the first-ever WPL Purple Cap winner.
