The Mariners registered a 4-0 dominating victory against the Blues at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru and climbed up to the second spot in the Indian Super League 2023-24 points table. Hector Yuste's early goal helped MBSG take the lead early in the first half and then Manvir Singh, Anirudh Thapa, and Armando Sadiku all scored in the second half to complete the riot. The Mariners were coming into the game after a narrow 1-0 victory against Punjab and they needed something to make a statement. They did so by thrashing Sunil Chhetri's Bengaluru on their turf. Mohun Bagan will now play the league decider against Mumbai City FC in their final match of the season.

It was not a great start to the game for Mohun Bagan Super Giant. They conceded an early yellow card which could have been a red too. Amandeep Bhan saw the card for a high boot challenge and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu also saw the yellow while protesting for a red. Minutes later, Bengaluru head coach Gerard Zaragoza saw a yellow card for getting into a verbal spat with Dimitri Petratos. It was a chaotic start with Bengaluru enjoying lots of possession. Hector Yuste hit the right post with a right-footed shot after receiving a cross from the corner and it was a golden opportunity for MBSG to get the lead and silence the home crowd. They did within a second when Hector put the ball in the back of the net on the second try. This time, it was a left-footed shot and it didn't give any chance to Gurpreet to pull off a save.
Yuste later saw a yellow card for bringing down Suresh. In the 39th minute, Anwar Ali tried to stop Sunil Chhetri from taking his shot but ended up bringing him down inside the box, receiving a yellow card for the offence. The referee pointed to the spot and the Blues found a lifeline to make a comeback in the match. The skipper stepped up to take the penalty but unfortunately, he hit the crossbar and MBSG cleared the ball in time to avoid the rebound opportunity. It was a huge miss and the home side paid the price in the second half.
Manvir doubled the lead early in the second half. Kauko found Manvir with an excellent touch and the latter beat Gurpreet in the near post. It was a huge goal for the team and soon they scored another one. Kauko took a grounded shot from a distance, which forced Gurpreet to save but he couldn't collect it and Petratos passed the rebound ball to Thapa who made no mistake in extending the Mariners' lead by 3 inside nine minutes of the second half.
Just six minutes after the third goal, Mohun Bagan scored their fourth and final goal of the match which was just a cherry on the top. Manvir Singh spotted Sadiku after making a brilliant run and he decided to square the ball to the Albanian who finished with calm. It was a complete domination from the Kolkata-based club in front of the Bengaluru fans. They almost scored their fifth in the 73rd minute when Manvir's flick rattled the crossbar. The Blues created nothing despite dominating the possession. It could have been a different game if Chhetri hadn't missed the penalty but there are no ifs and buts in sport. MBSG are now all set to play a League Shield decider against Mumbai City FC in their final match.
