Canada vs Republic of Ireland Match report
1st Half
The first half belonged to Ireland from the word go. They didn't let Canada create many chances in the first 45 minutes and was almost rewarded with a one goal advantage, until Megan Connolly scored an own goal at the brink of half time.
So at the very start of the match Canada conceded an unnecessary corner with them having little knowledge of what was about to come. Kate McCabe, Ireland's captain scored within 5 minutes straight from a corner with a brilliant left footed inswinger.
It was Ireland's first ever goal in a World Cup game and it gave them a whole lot of confidence. Ireland dominated the midfield and gave Canada little to no chance to equalise. Canadian defenders were unable to deal with the throw balls by the Republic of Ireland players and we're miserable for most parts of the first part.
After a while Canada finally got control of the ball but Ireland was still solid at the back. They weren't giving Canada the freedom to play in the middle of the pitch. In the latter stages of the first half they enjoyed a spell where they should've scored but it felt like it was Ireland's day.
Canada didn't lose hope and kept attacking. They kept pushing Ireland to the extent of scoring an own goal, which squared things out. Megan Connolly tried to clear the ball but mistakenly flicked the ball in her own net.
Republic of Ireland was clearly the better team in the first half but Canada found a way through their defense and equalised just before half time.
