Brazil were brilliant in their opening-match win over Panama, while France played a boring goalless draw with Jamaica. Brazil expected to take the game away from their European opponents. First half:
Le Sommer was a constant danger to the Brazilian backline and she kept on pushing them to go more defensive. She forced Leticia into a brilliant save a couple of times. The goal came in the 17th minute when Kadidiatou Diani won the first header, and Le Sommer showed her striker's instinct to make the free space for herself and glance the ball home. France deserved the lead and they got it. Brazil got some opportunities in the first half but they were not clinical. In a match like this, half chances are also very crucial and it got proved again.
Second half:
The second half saw Brazil come roaring back in the clash. Debinha provided them with the equalizer in the 58th minute. She took control of a deflected Kerolin shot, assessing the angles, and slotted home her first Women's World Cup goal. Brazil thought they had claimed a hard-earned draw. The importance of set pieces was once again reinforced in the game's decisive moment. Renard, one of the game's greatest-ever in such situations came forward for a corner and smashed into the far corner of the net. The goal broke Brazilian hearts and took France to the summit of Group F, one point clear of their beaten opponents.
