Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy earned an important point for his newly promoted side following a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League 2024-25 Matchday 1 at the King Power Stadium. Spurs dominated the first half but except for the goal of the Portuguese defender, they could create nothing exceptional. After conceding, they had the best opportunities in the second half but couldn't secure the three points.
Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspur: What happened in the game?
Pedro Porro scored the opener in the 29th minute for Spurs. Porro delivered on the end of a James Maddison cross to guide home the opening goal. The new headline signing Solanke missed an opportunity before Porro's goal and then missed another one in the second half.
Vardy, however, made no mistake for Leicester as the 37-year-old collected the eighth Premier League opening-day goal of his career. The Leicester skipper headed the equalizer into the net in the 57th minute of the game.
Richarlison missed a golden opening to win it at the death for Spurs and they had to settle for one when they should have taken the all three. Spurs’ evening went from bad to worse when midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was carried off on a stretcher following a nasty collision. The Uruguayan midfielder was given oxygen but was later reported to be okay and recovering.
“Disappointing night for us. The first half was excellent and we controlled the game but were wasteful in front of goal. The second half was the same,” Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou told Sky Sports.
“We started well and once Leicester scored, the crowd lifted and we lost our composure. It was an issue we had last year as well, we need to keep working hard and be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. At times we made poor decisions. It’s not our football or effort. To get results you need to be a lot more ruthless in the final third. If we don’t we won’t get the rewards our football deserves.” he added.
Jamie Vardy had a beautiful reception at the King Power Stadium in his comeback with the club in the Premier League. It was not indeed the best start but a positive one against a strong Tottenham side.
“I see age as just a number. As long as I keep looking after myself and my legs keep feeling great, then I will carry on for as long as is physically possible,” Vardy said. “I wouldn’t say I am doing anything differently playing-wise. Probably adapted a bit by dropping in but I think the main thing is I am looking after myself recovery-wise to the maximum,” he added.
