Mateu Alemany is set to continue at Barcelona after deciding to leave the club a few days ago. Alemany joined Barcelona in 2021, as part of the new regime under president Joan Laporta. The 60-year-old has done a brilliant job in the market especially with the club going through a difficult time financially. Barcelona were crowned champion of La Liga 2023-23 after defeating Espanyol. This might be the reason behind Alemany's change of mind.

Mateu Alemany to continue at Barcelona

Alemany's work in the last summer's transfer window was unremarkable as he helped the Blaugrana secure top players like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Andreas Christensen, among others. So, when the club officially confirmed that he would be departing on June 30, it came as a blow. It was believed that the former Valencia director was set to join Aston Villa in the Premier League and was even planning transfer strategies with their manager Unai Emery already.

What made him a change of mind then? It is now being reported that Alemany met with Barcelona president Laporta earlier today and offered to continue at the club and see through the project he has helped build over the past two years.

This move comes a day after it was confirmed that Jordi Cruyff will also be leaving Barcelona. The Blaugrana were already planning a major restructuring within the club as both the directors seemed set for an exit. Former midfielder Deco was the first in the race to take over as director from Alemany and it was claimed that his appointment was very close.

In fact, the former Portuguese international even held a meeting with Alemany earlier today at Barcelona's Ciutat Esportiva complex. Soon after that, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Alemany has offered to continue at the club. There could be a possibility that the 60-year-old continues in his current role while Deco comes in and occupies the position that was held by Cruyff. The decision will now be up to President Laporta and it will be interesting to see what happens next.
