After the bizarre 5-2 result in England in the first leg of this tie, Real Madrid had one foot in the next round of the Champions League already. However, in Real Madrid vs Liverpool, if there is one thing this competition has shown time and time again - it is that nothing is really over until it is over.
One Liverpool goal would change the trajectory completely, and give the reds some extra motivation. The Madrid starting line-up was strong, with Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernández starting as the full-backs.
Eduardo Camavinga got the nod in midfield, with Fede Valverde being pushed out-wide because of this. The bench consisted solely of first team players for the first time in a while, as no Castilla or youth players were given the call-up. Karim Benzema captained the side.
Real Madrid vs Liverpool: Summary
For a team that needed goals quickly, Liverpool looked slightly reserved - but they did have the first chance of the game when Darwin Núñez tested Thibaut Courtois with a snap-shot. Fede Valverde would then get his first chance of many, shooting low and wide past the post.
Vinícius Júnior should have made it 1-0 from close range, but Alisson Becker did well to deny him with some quick reactions in the air. Eduardo Camavinga would then be denied by the Brazilian keeper. Luka Modrić fired another long-shot towards goal, with the ball flying just over the bar this time.
Núñez would try to respond for the visitors with a curling effort, but Courtois would again come to clutch to tap the ball wide. Madrid would make it to half-time with the score at 0-0, and the tie all but sealed.
Second Half:
If you thought that Liverpool were passive in the first half, it would only get worse for them in the second. Madrid started to take control as Vinícius Júnior tried to thread Karim Benzema through - and almost got the ball back close to goal, but couldn't finish off the move.
Valverde was then played clean through by Benzema but ran out of ideas, kicking the ball into the keeper. Benzema had another pop inside the box, but his effort went over the target. Time was ticking for Liverpool, and the margins were shrinking with three goals needed to have any chance at progression.
It was still Madrid with a foothold on the game however, and the hosts took the lead with a scrappy goal as Vinícius tapped it to Benzema whilst on the floor for the Frenchman to score an open goal. The tie was now dead, and substitutes were brought on to see the result out.
The final whistle blew to after a lengthy VAR check for no reason to cement Real Madrid's place in the last eight of the competition.

Football is the most popular sport in the world, as nearly every country participates in the sport. As a global sport, it can be extremely challenging to make it big in football, largely due to intense competition. And, if you are talking about winning the three biggest trophies in world football, it is a rare incident.
However, with some geniuses on the field, we have seen some remarkable football facts happening over the years. So, it gives us a chance to take a look at those players with great achievements and football facts. Today, we will take a look at those players who won the Champions League, FIFA World Cup and Ballon d'Or.
UFA Champions League
The Champions League is the biggest club tournament in Europe. Also, it is considered the best club football tournament in the world. The top clubs from the top-tier national leagues participate in this tournament.
The competition started in 1955, and since then, Real Madrid has been the most successful club in the tournament. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is the most successful player in the Champions League with 134 goals in the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup is the biggest international tournament in the world. 32 qualified countries compete with each other for the biggest prize in international football. Brazil is the most successful team in the World Cup with 5 titles.
Meanwhile, Miroslav Klose is the top scorer in the Football World Cup with 16 goals to his name.
Ballon d'Or
Ballon d'Or is the biggest individual prize in football. The award is given to the best player in the world for a single season. The award has been given to the players since 1956 and is the most prestigious individual award in football history.
However, from 2011-2015, the award was merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year. Lionel Messi has won the most Ballon d'Or awards (8) than any other player in football history.
Football Facts: Players with Champions League, FIFA World Cup and Ballon d'Or
Ousame Dembele is the latest player to have won FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d'Or in his career.
As you already got the idea of how big these three trophies are in the football world, you can imagine how tough it can be to win all of them in a career.
There are only 9 players who have won Champions League, FIFA World Cup and Ballon d'Or in their career. Let's find them out in this special football facts segment.
#1 Sir Bobby Charlton
The England legend was the first player to achieve the feat of winning all the big trophies in football.
Booby Charlton spent 17 years at Manchester United when the club became one of the biggest football clubs in England. Charlton scored 115 goals in his club career before retiring in 1979.
Sir Bobby Charlton won the FIFA World Cup in 1966 and was adjudged the best player in the world, too.
He won the 1966 Ballon d'Or award. Charlton had scored 3 goals in that World Cup and had some major contributions to the team. He went on to win the European Cup/Champions League with Manchester United in 1968.
Nicknamed as the "Der Kiser (The Emperor)", Beckenbauer is the second player on our list of these special football facts.
The German was a defender known for his leadership skills and elegant football. The Bayern Munich legend won the Ballon d'Or award twice in 1972 and 1976.
Beckenbauer also managed to win three Champions League titles, which was called the European Champions' Cup. He won it with Bayern Munich in 1974, 1975 and 1976.
But the major success in his career came in 1974 when he won the FIFA World Cup. That was West Germany's second FIFA World Cup title.
Gerd Müller is regarded as one of the greatest football players in the history of the game. He has the most goals per match ratio (0.95) in the Champions League history.
The centre forward from Germany won 1 Ballon d'Or, 3 Champions League and 1 FIFA World Cup. Actually, it was his 15 years at Bayern Munich that made him the legend that he is.
Müller was a teammate of Beckenbauer, who won the 1974 FIFA World Cup. In fact, along with Beckenbauer, he played a major role in Bayern Munich winning the Champions League in three consecutive years in 1974, 1975 and 1976.
However, Müller won the Ballon d'Or only once in the year 1970.
#4 Paolo Rossi
The centre forward from Italy won it all when it comes to football. With 133 goals in his club career, he was one of the best of his time. The 1980s were a successful decade for him.
Rossi won the FIFA World Cup in 1982, and that made him earn the Ballon d'Or award as well. He was the top scorer of the 1982 FIFA World Cup with 6 goals.
Then the Italian legend went on to win the 1984/85 Champions League with Juventus FC. However, Rossi had nearly 11 transfers in his club career, which is quite astonishing as well.
The France international might be the most influential player in his country's recent football history. Zidane was known for his style of play, skills and control on the ball and goal-scoring ability.
The Juventus and Real Madrid legend managed to win the 1998 FIFA World Cup and then went on to win the 1998 Ballon d'Or as well.
Zidane won the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid. It was also the only Champions League he won in his career. However, the 2006 FIFA World Cup incident ended his international career infamously.
Rivaldo, the former Brazilian captain, had everything that a captain should have. Moreover, when you are representing the rich football history of Brazilian football, either you soak the pressure or you rise above it.
The Brazilian forward has 35 international goals in his career. Also, he has scored 233 goals in his club career as well. Rivaldo won the 1999 Ballon d'Or following Zidane's success in 1998.
Rivaldo won the FIFA World Cup in 2002 as a captain in Japan. Then, he went on to win the UEFA Champions League in the 2002-03 season with AC Milan as well, and this is how Rivaldo became the 6th player on our football facts list.
Ronaldinho is probably the most skilful player of this generation. If it were not for his lifestyle, he might have been the best to play the game. With his vision and dribbling skills, he was loved by everyone in the football world.
With 197 goals, Ronaldinho is one of the most successful midfielders of the last 20 years. His bonding with Kaka and his contribution to Messi's early career is still a beautiful football story.
Ronaldinho won the 2002 FIFA World Cup along with Rivaldo and Kaka. Then he went on to win the Ballon d'Or in 2005 and the UEFA Champions League in the 2005/06 season with Barcelona.
It is not astonishing to see that the most recent players to win the Champions League, World Cup, and Ballon d'Or are from Brazil. This is how good the Brazil team was at that time.
Along with Rivaldo and Rolandinho, Kaka won the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Then, while playing for AC Milan, he won everything in football. In 2007, he won the UEFA Champions League with AC Milan, and then he went on to win the Ballon d'Or also in the same year.
In addition to that, Kaka became the highest-paid footballer in the world after AC Milan extended their contract for nearly $12 million.
9. Lionel Messi
Probably the greatest player in football history and the most successful one ever, with 46 trophies, Lionel Messi was the ninth player to achieve the feat of winning the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d'Or.
Messi, the Argentine genius, won the Ballon d'Or award a record 8 times in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
While playing for FC Barcelona, Messi won the UEFA Champions League four times in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015. And then he went on to complete the circle with the triumph in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
10. Ousmane Dembele
France and PSG right winger Ousmane Dembele became the 10th player in the history of football to achieve the feat of winning the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d'Or.
28-year-old Dembele, who had already won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, helped Paris St. Germain (PSG) win their first-ever UEFA Champions League title in 2025.
His incredible league stats and success with PSG in the Champions League also helped him bag the 2025 Ballon d'Or award as well.

Full-time | Ajax 0-2 Inter
Last season's beaten finalists start in impressive fashion, Marcus Thuram heading both goals as Inter see off Ajax.
The Dutch side were unfortunate not to score when an excellent Yann Sommer denied Mika Godts' save before the opening goal, but Cristian Chivu's first experience of the UEFA Champions League as a coach produced a confident victory for the visitors.
Luis Enrique can’t have wished for much more. A swashbuckling attacking display that included four goals and a well-deserved clean sheet.
After a league phase campaign fraught with jeopardy last time round, Paris start their quest for a second consecutive Champions League crown in the most consummate of ways.
As for Atalanta, they toiled and stuck to their task, but will now focus on picking up their first points against Club Brugge in two weeks time.

Full time | Liverpool 3-2 Atletico
Liverpool found a way for a hard-fought three points in their league phase opener.
Atleti deserve huge credit for their response to falling 2-0 down. The hosts fashioned the better chances after the interval, with Mohamed Salah striking the post, but Marcos Llorente’s late volley was cancelled out by Virgil Van Dijk right at the end.

Half-time | Liverpool 2-1 Atletico Madrid
Liverpool could hardly have wished for a better start at Anfield after Andy Robertson’s fortuitous opener and Mohamed Salah’s fine effort, but Atleti have done well to gain a foothold and managed to half the deficit through Marcos Llorente on the stroke of half-time.
The hosts will need to hit the ground running in the second half, otherwise it might be back to square one for Arne Slot's team.

Half-time | Ajax 0- 1 Inter
After something of a shaky start, Ajax managed to find their way back into the game.
Ironically, they had the best chance of taking the lead – Yann Sommer saving expertly from Mika Godts – seconds before Marcus Thuram headed the visitors in front at the other end.
John Heitinga’s men will now have to commit more men forward in search of an equaliser, which could play into Inter’s hands.
Sep 17, 2025, 7:53 PM
Half-time | PSG 2-1 Atalanta
A consummate performance befitting of champions. Paris have started their European campaign in much the same vein they finished the last - in total control. In truth, Atalanta had done well to limit the hosts to Marquinhos’ close-range finish, with Marco Carnesecchi largely to thank, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia eventually added a sumptuous second.
Bradley Barcola’s missed penalty is the only blemish, while Atalanta will be grateful for the half-time break.
Against Atletico Madrid, Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah have found the net for Liverpool within first 6 minutes of the match.

Full time: Praha 2-2 Bodo
What a contest we have witnessed! Both teams gave everything, competing all the way. Slavia earned a two-goal advantage thanks to a pair of strikes from Youssoupha Mbodji on his full debut, butBodø/Glimt displayed the character they so often showed during last season's run to the Europa League semi-finals thanks to substitutes Sondre Brunstad Fet and Daniel Bassi. A breathtaking evening, with both clubs showing why they play at this level.

Full time: Olympiacos 0-0 Pafos
Pafos make a memorable debut in the UEFA Champions League, taking a point despite having ten players for more than an hour. Olympiacos applied plenty of pressure around the opposition box but may feel their finishing could have been better, while the Cypriot club managed to disarm them and escape unscathed.
Up next, potentially greater hurdles for both sides: Olympiacos travel to London for their game against Arsenal, while Pafos play host to Bayern Munich.

Full-time: Real Madrid 2-1 Marseille
A pair of penalties from Kylian Mbappé helped Real Madrid turn a deficit into victory in Xabi Alonso's first Champions League game at the helm.
After withstanding early pressure from the hosts, Marseille struck first through Timothy Weah's emphatic finish, but Alonso's side were quickly level when Mbappé converted from the spot following a foul by Geoffrey Kondogbia on Rodrygo.
Although Madrid had Dani Carvajal sent off in the 72nd minute, Mbappé struck again with nine minutes left after Facundo Medina was penalised for handball.

Full time: Juventus 4-4 Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund and Juventus shared the spoils after an eight-goal thriller in Turin thatequalled the record for the highest-scoring Champions League draw.
Khéphren Thuram and Loïs Openda both went close for the hosts in the first half, before Karim Adeyemi’s 52nd-minute finish sparked the encounter into life.
Kenan Yıldız, Felix Nmecha and Dušan Vlahović all scored in a four-minute flurry before Yan Couto's powerful finish made it 3-2 to Dortmund.
The visitors looked to have sealed victory through Ramy Bensebaini's 85th-minute penalty, but Juventus rescued a draw in added time thanks to Dušan Vlahović's finish and a Lloyd Kelly header.

Full time: Benfica 2-3 Qarabag
Qarabağ claim a historic win here in Lisbon – and few can argue with the result. Benfica were 2-0 up after 16 minutes, but after Leandro Andrade’s goal, the Azerbaijan champions grew in confidence and made the most of their momentum to level and ultimately win it in the closing stages. Welcome back, Champions League!

Full time: PSV 1-3 USG
What an excellent performance by Sébastien Pocognoli’s men. Throughout the match they seemed able to absorb any pressure, remain calm when in possession, and now and again turn up the heat to inflict damage on the home side.
Great displays all round, with Anouar Ait El Hadj and Christian Burgess particularly impressive. An amazing start to the club’s UEFA Champions League career.
Sep 16, 2025, 6:48 PM
Full time | Athletic 0-2 Arsenal
Substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard strike to give Arsenal a winning start in a tight contest in Bilbao, where Athletic Club performed admirably on their much-anticipated return to the competition.
Sep 16, 2025, 5:39 PM
Half-time | Athletic 0-0 Arsenal
Arsenal have failed to score in Spain in the first half.
Mikel Arteta's men looked good but not sharp enough. Meantime Athletic have done well to defend and attack on the chances they got.
Important 45 minutes to come.
