Spain held their nerves to win the UEFA Nations League final by defeating Croatia 5-4 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Rotterdam. Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal converted the winning spot-kick after Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon saved efforts from Croatia's Lovro Majer and Bruno Petkovic. Spain's triumph saw them seal a fifth major trophy and become the second nation after France to have won the World Cup, European Championship, and the Nations League.
Manchester City pair Rodri and Aymeric Laporte, who scored and missed for Spain respectively in the shoot-out, have won a fourth major trophy of the season. Croatia defeated the Netherlands 4-2 after extra time in their semi-final on Wednesday to book their spot in the Nations League final. They had been hoping to win their first major tournament but once again returned with empty hands.
Nations League Final: What happened in the match?
Spain did not have one shot on target in a poor first half of regulation time, while Laporte's last-ditch tackle thwarted Andrej Kramaric, and Ivan Perisic's header forced Simon into a diving save. Spain went close in the 58th minute when Marco Asensio headed their best chance up to then just over from the over-lapping Jordi Alba's cross. Croatia responded through Mario Pasalic's header, after another ball in from Perisic, before Spain stepped it up, with Fabian Ruiz's chipped effort and Asensio's shot on the turn both going close. Spain went closer to breaking the deadlock in the 86th minute when Perisic blocked Ansu Fati's shot on the goal-line following fellow substitute Mikel Merino's cut-back.
Croatia substitute Majer was also denied by last-ditch defending as his shot after a counter-attack was blocked by Nacho in the first period of extra time. Spain threw caution to the wind in the second period and finished the game on top. Dani Olmo and Asensio's shots deflected for a corner. Croatia blocked Rodri's shot as the third Nations League final went to penalties. Unai Simon saved Majer's penalty with his legs. Laporte had the chance to finish the tie but he hit the crossbar as the game went into sudden death. Petkovic got denied by Unai Simon and Carvajal converted a nerveless winner.

Kylian Mbappe's demands from PSG: FFF fails to submit documents to UEFA
FFF has reportedly not provided documents concerning the ongoing dispute between Kylian Mbappe and PSG, in which Mbappe demands €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses from PSG.
According to reports, the French Football Federation (FFF) has failed to submit documents to UEFA regarding the ongoing dispute between Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain.
The French forward lodged a demand of €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses from his former club, which was sanctioned by the legal commission of the LFP.
However, the FFF has failed to provide documents and reportedly has not taken any action, leaving the door open for Mbappe's camp to directly notify UEFA about the negligence.
The Mbappe-PSG dispute keeps escalating
The conflict between the two parties started taking shape from an agreement made in mid-August 2023 between the striker and PSG's management.
At that time, Kylian Mbappe was sidelined from the team after refusing to extend his contract with PSG. If he had agreed to the extension, the club would have received transfer fees.
On September 11, 2024, the legal commission of the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ruled in favor of Mbappe, stating that the French club is obligated to pay the asked sum to the player.
Subsequently, on October 25, the joint commission of the League also supported Mbappé's case and ordered PSG to make the payment.
However, on December 11, the disciplinary commission of the Professional Football League determined that the application filed was invalid due to PSG summoning the LFP to the Paris Judicial Court. As a result, the club has not yet made the payment.
According to AFP on 22 November, The FFF rejected PSG’s request to reconsider an order from the French league to pay the demanded fee to their former striker.
Another turn in this long-standing fall-out
The dispute has now taken another turn as per the reports from L'Equipe. According to the French outlet, Mbappe's lawyer Delphine Verheyden questioned the FFF in a letter about whether they had notified the European body on this matter.
Verheyden explained that the FFF acts as an intermediary for the "UEFA club license" required to participate in European competitions. According to L'Equipe:
However, the FFF did nothing, because they believe the case is still open as PSG has appealed to the Paris judicial court to contest the decisions made by the French Professional Football League (LFP) against them.
By 15 January 2025, PSG had to demonstrate to UEFA that they were not indebted to their employees or that they were behind on any payments. In such cases, clubs are sanctioned or may be expelled from the UEFA-licensed club competitions.
However, PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi holds the position of the ECA's (European Clubs Association) head, making this whole dispute a sensitive matter.
With FFF taking no action, the proceeding has taken a different turn and may continue for a long period in the upcoming months.
Zero wins against big teams: What has happened to Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid | Analysis
Real Madrid struggled against big teams like Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Liverpool, Athletic and Barcelona this season. What has happened to Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid? Where are they lacking? Here is the detailed analysis
Real Madrid are currently doing well against lower and medium-reputed teams with score lines like 3-0 against Mallorca, 5-0 against CD Minera, 2-1 against Valencia, 4-2 against Sevilla and 3-0 against Pachuca.
But this season, against highly reputed names like Athletica Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, and Liverpool, Real Madrid struggled hugely. What's gone wrong with Carlo Ancelotti's team?
Let's analyze that.
Carlo Ancelotti with Real Madrid so far
In two spells in charge at Madrid, between 2013 and 2015, and from 2021, Ancelotti has lifted threeChampions League trophies, two LaLiga titles, two Copa del Reys, two Spanish Super Copas, three UEFA Super Cups, two Club World Cups, and now the Intercontinental Cup.
But this season, Ancelotti's team looks in a different shape. Even though Real Madrid are challenging for the La Liga title, and currently at the second spot, they are struggling against the highly reputed teams.
The expectation for top teams in Europe, like Madrid, is at least to win the home league and cup and reach the semis of the Champions League.
But Real Madrid have currently lost the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona, and they could be relegated from the Champions League as well.
Tactical Analysis of Carlo Ancelotti's past and present formations
During the 2023/2024 season, Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid showcased a remarkable blend of formations and adaptability. Primarily set up in a versatile 4-3-3 formation, Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid fluidly shifts into various structures like 4-5-1 or 3-5-2 or a 4-3-2-1, adapting as the game calls for.
But this season, Carlo Ancelotti’s refusal to change his approach in these moments has left the team vulnerable in key fixtures. Whether it’s his preference for a 4-3-3 or his insistence on specific player roles, the lack of tactical flexibility has been a recurring issue. And the major teams are taking advantage of this vulnerability with the team.
Squad Issues
Real Madrid has had a number of injuries to key players in the 2024–2025 season. Players like Luka Modric are also getting aged. The team is over-reliant more on star players like Vinicius Jr., Bellingham, andMbappe.
The bench looks moderate, enabling poor squad depth that impacted big games, which means a poor summer transfer business and strong reinforcement required in this ongoing transfer window.
The team mentally looks fragile and hunger less, and Mbappe struggles under pressure, enabling a shift in leadership and approach under Carlo Ancelotti, which is a contrast if we compare this team with the previous campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Perspective
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said that only Kylian Mbappe turned up for the Spanish Super Cup final while the rest of the team disappointed in their 5-2 defeat against Barcelona.
“You have to defend well to win these games. Barcelona deserved to win; they defended better than us. The team is not looking good, but I’m not going to point the finger at anyone."
"Mbappe had a good game, he was probably the only one who played well. I’m not going to name names on this, but we were not good from the first minute, and did not perform,” Ancelotti said.
💥 ANCELOTTI, MUY AUTOCRÍTICO:
"Esta es la realidad, no hemos defendido bien y por eso han marcado de manera sencilla".
The defending La Liga champions will be in action next when they take on Osasuna at the Bernabeu on Saturday, October 9 as they look to chase down leadersBarcelona heading into the November international break.
Can Real Madrid bounce back from this terrible situation? What Ancelotti plans next?? Questions are many that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
