Hockey India names 20-member Women's Hockey squad for Asian Champions Trophy 2023

The 20-member Indian Women's Hockey team has been announced by Hockey India for the Jharkhand Women's Asian Champions Trophy 2023 on Wednesday.

Apart from India, teams from Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand will participate in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023. The Indian women's team recently won the bronze medal in the 19th Asian Games. Savita Punia will lead the Indian team in the tournament while Deep Grace Ekka will play the role of vice-captain. The Asian Champions Trophy 2023 will be played from October 27 to November 5 in Ranchi.

India will start their campaign in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 against Thailand on October 27, followed by Malaysia on October 28. India will face China in its third match on Monday i.e. 30th October while it will face Japan on 31st October. India will play its last pool match against Korea on November 2. The semi-finals of the tournament will be played on 4 November and the final on 5 November.

Meanwhile, Savita Punia and Bichu Devi Kharibam have been included in the list of goalkeepers. While Nikki Pradhan, Udita, Ishika Chaudhary, and Deep Grace Ekka will be deployed in the defense line. Nisha, Salima Tete, Neha, Navneet Kaur, Sonika, Monika, Jyoti, and Baljeet Kaur will form the midfield line-up while Lalremsiami, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, and Vandana Katariya will take charge of the forwards in the team. On the other hand, Sharmila Devi and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke will also be present with the team as backup options.

"It is an important tournament for us to continue our momentum and our steady improvement as a team. While we performed well at the Asian Games to claim the Bronze medal, the upcoming tournament will give us a chance to further improve our standings against our Asian challengers. We will get a chance to put our learnings from Hangzhou into action and test ourselves once again. With the tournament happening in Ranchi, Jharkhand, we are eager to perform our best in front of home fans, and showcase our growth as a team."
