India's History in the Asian Games
India, which has participated in all editions of this multi-sports event held once in four years, also played an important role in the establishment and launch of the Asian Games. Apart from this, India also hosted the first edition of the Asian Games which was organized in the country's capital New Delhi.
India won a total of 51 medals in the inaugural edition of the Asian Games. This included 15 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze medals. India was second in the medal table. However, after this they had to wait for 31 years to get 50 medals. India won 57 medals including 13 gold in the Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982. In 1954, India won a total of 17 medals and in 1958, only 13 medals, whereas in 1951, India won 15 gold.
Moreover, such an occasion also came in 1990, when India was not even in the top 10 in the medal table. This year also India had only 23 medals. There was only one gold medal in it. India's performance improved from 1998 onwards and in 2006, for the first time, India won more than 50 medals away from home. Since then, India has been winning more than 50 medals continuously.
Meanwhile, in 2010, India won 65 medals and achieved a new record for the highest number of medals. In 2018, India bettered this and won 70 medals.

India at the Asian Games 2023
India finished fourth in the overall medals tally at the Asian Games 2023. This is the country's best-ever medal haul at the quadrennial event. With 107 medals, India's medal tally comprised of 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. India also managed to top the medal table in four different events at this edition of the Asiad- archery, cricket, kabaddi and hockey.
