India's Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar on Wednesday clinched gold medal in the individual event of men's 50 meter rifle 3 positions and silver medal in the team category at the ongoing Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon, Korea. Despite winning gold, he did not secure a Paris Olympics 2024 quota as India already had secured the optimum two quota places in this event.
22 year old Tomar won the gold medal by scoring 463.5 points. China's Tian Jiaming (462.7) got silver and Du Linshu (450.3) got bronze medal. Tomar stood 5th in qualification with 591 marks. While China's Du Linshu topped the standings with 597 points, followed by Japan's Naoya Okada(595) and Iran's Pourya Norouziyan(593).
Despite missing out olympics quota, Aishwary has a lot to celebrate as the young shooter has had a fantastic last couple of months in terms of performance. Before his gold medal triumph in Korea, he secured the coveted gold medal and broke the world record at the Asian Games in the men's 10m air rifle team. He also won the bronze medal in the men's 10m air rifle individual event.
China's Tian Jiaming and Kazakhstan's Konstantin Malinovskiy won the available Paris quota places from the Asian Shooting Championships as India was ineligible for any more quota since the country had secured two quota places in this event. Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran won India's optimum two quota places at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
