Mohun Bagan Super Giant managed to secure a 2-1 win in the Group A match of the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 at the Kalinga Stadium on January 9, 2024, Tuesday. MBSG came back from 1-0 down to win the match 2-1 after the goals scored by Jason Cummings and Armando Sadiku. It is a huge three points for the Mariners who will be up against Hyderabad FC next.
Sreenidi Deccan drew the first blood after William Oliveira converted from the spot in the 28th minute. However, Jason Cummings scored the equaliser in the 39th minute, and Armando Sadiku scored the winner in the 71st minute.
The Mariners dominated the proceedings initially and showed their intent right from the start. However, Sreenidi grew into the game slowly. Right before the 30-minute mark, Sumit Rathi brought down Lalromawia inside the box. Oliviera took the penalty and converted precisely to provide Sreenidi with the lead.
The Mariners upped their tempo after falling 1-0 down. Jason Cummings scored in the 39th minute by slotting Abhishek Suryawanshi's pass in the back of the net.
Hugo Boumous continued to play as the orchestrator for MBSG in the second half, while Petratos and Armando Sadiku tried to do the damage upfront.
Finally Sadiku put his team in the lead. Boumous found Asish Rai, and the wing-back's brilliant trickery helped him get past his marker to drill in a low cross inside the six-yard box. Sadiku made no mistake to score from close range.
Sreenidi put immense pressure on the Mohun Bagan defence and Mohun Bagan nearly bottled the game. Suryawanshi picked up his second yellow card in the 86th minute, leaving his team with 10 men in the last few minutes.
Sreenidi tried to make the most of the numerical advantage and did everything to get the equaliser, but Mohun Bagan stood tall to earn the three points from the game. Asish Rai was given the 'Man of the Match' award for his terrific performance in the Mohun Bagan defence.
"I am very pleased with the victory and also the way how the players responded and showed positive attitude. After last week, it was difficult for everyone. But players showed aggression, showed our will to win the game, and that is what we take in these 90 minutes," Mohun Bagan coach Clifford Miranda said after the match.
