Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra on Thursday took to microblogging site X to request authorities, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, to resolve the visa issue of Kishor Jena and help the athlete participate in the Budapest World Athletics Championships 2023.

On July 30, Jena won gold in the National Championship held in Sri Lanka with a personal record of 84.38 and he made it to the World Athletics Championship 2023 through the World Ranking Quota.

Apart from Neeraj, another Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar also participated in the Lausanne Diamond League 2023. He jumped 7.75, 7.63, 7.88 and 7.59, and 7.66 meters in the first 5 attempts. However, he could not win any medal as he finished fifth.

Neeraj is recovering from a hamstring strain sustained during training last month, due to which he pulled out of the FBK Games in the Netherlands on June 4 and the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on June 13.

Even though there is no official confirmation regarding his return, his name does not figure in the updated list of participants. On Friday, June 9, the official website of the tournament released an updated list of participants.

Rohit Yadav, world No. 15, and DP Manu, world No. 17, are the other Indian javelin throwers in the top 20 javelin throw rankings.

India will also pin their hopes on Eldhose Paul, who will be India’s first representation at the event in the men’s triple jump event.

The Diamond League 2023 season will begin on May 5 at the Qatar Sports Club in Doha and conclude with a two-day final in Eugene, USA.
