Tripura vs Bengal, Ranji Trophy 2025-26 recap: Tripura shocks Bengal with tons from Vihari and Mura; Tripura 3, Bengal 1
Murasingh celebrating his 5th First-class ton.

The game was hanging in the balance despite a fantastic finish to Day 2 by the hosts, Tripura, against mighty Bengal in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, Elite Group C clash at Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium in Agartala. But, on the final day of the match, Tripura made sure they would earn their first point of the season - that too, three against a star-studded Bengal lineup.

Equation before the start on Day 4

The equation before the start of Day 4 was that Bengal would need 3 wickets for three points while Tripura required 63 runs to earn the same. For Bengal, it was Mohammed Shami and the new ball, while for Tripura, it was the partnership between captain Manisankar Murasingh and Hanuma Vihari, which was supposed to decide the match.

No swing with the new ball for Bengal

Ranji Trophy 2025-26: Tripura flips the story against flumber Bengal, earns three points; tons from Vihari and Murasingh
Murasingh pulling one short ball from Ishan Porel.

As planned, Bengal took the new ball in the third over of the day after Shami and Ishan Porel warmed up with one over each with the older ball. However, there was not much effect with the brand-new ball.

While everyone expected Shami to run through the tail, it was Manisankar Murasingh who got some quick early runs to take the target below fifty for Tripura, and reached his fifty too. The new ball did not swing or seam, which was of no help to the Bengal bowlers.

Shami changed angles, but was not able to challenge both the batters and create any chance for Bengal. Soon, Bengal’s most successful bowler in this match, Mohammed Kaif, replaced Ishan Porel from the City End, and he leaked some boundaries, which did not help the cause either.

However, Shami was replaced by Ishan Porel, from the Pavilion End, and that resulted in a dismissal for Bengal. Hanuma Vihari, who was earlier dropped off Ishan Porel when the batter was on 53 on Day 3, was able to hit him in front of the wicket and get the desired result from the umpire.

Tension rose at the ground, and for everyone following the match, with the new equation being 21 needed for Tripura and 2 wickets needed for Bengal. A few hundred present at the ground along with some U-19 Tripura cricketers gave Hanuma Vihari a standing ovation for his 141, his first big knock for Tripura.

Rana Dutta’s heroics at No. 10

Rana Dutta and Manisankar Murasingh gave Tripura first-inning lead against Bengal, Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match | sportzpoint.com
Roar from Murasingh after Tripura got the first-innings lead.

Even though Tripura lost the previous two games and batters did not do well, the murmur in the gallery was that both Rana Dutta and Abhijit Sarkar can also bat, which meant Tripura nearly have 11 batters in the team.

Although Abhijit was supposed to come at No.10, captain Murasingh wanted Rana Dutta, as he wanted two lefties in the middle since neither Ishan Porel nor Mohammed Kaif was able to bring the ball back into the lefties.

Bengal’s plan to keep the field open for Murasingh helped him get some easy singles while Rana looked comfortable even against Mohammed Shami, who returned for his 8th spell of the inning. Shami tested the pacer with some bouncers, which he negotiated very well.

Desperate Bengal tried their final weapon as they brought off-spinner Rahul Prasad with Tripura needed 9 runs to earn three points. Rana Dutta took the first single, and then Murasingh hit back-to-back boundaries to give them the lead. A roar from the all-rounder and a cheer from the dugout proved how important it was for them.

Murasingh after reaching his 5th first-class ton.

Rana was crucial in that 20, as he added 11 of them to ensure their lead. Finally, Rahul Prasad dismissed Rana on 27, and Murasingh took his chance to hit a six off Shahbaz Ahmed to get to his fifth first-class ton, before they were bowled out for 385, with a lead of 49.

Bengal’s scare with the bat

Although everything was settled with both teams knowing the end result, Tripura bowlers made sure they gave their home fans a reason to stay for a bit longer.

Rana Dutta, after his heroics with the bat, struck in the first over to dismiss Sudip Kumar Gharami, the centurion from the first inning, on duck. Then Abhijit Sarkar trapped Kazi Juanid Saifi in front of the wicket on a duck to make it a pair for the left-handed top-order batter. At 0/2, scenes looked scary for Bengal.

Abhijit Sarkar made it worse by dismissing Habib Gandhi with a short ball, which came at an awkward height for the left-hander as he went to pull the ball. The scoreboard said 13/3, trailed by 36. Tripura might have gone on to create something miraculous if Hrituraj Ghosh Roy had not dropped an easy catch at short midwicket off Abhitjit Sarkar, just two balls later.

Eventually, Anustup Majumdar and Shahbaz Ahmed took Bengal out of misery. Teams shook hands after Shahbaz reached his fifty, with Bengal finishing on 90/3.

Bengal now dropped to third place in the group while Tripura rose one spot up to No.7 after their three points. Bengal will next face Railways, while Tripura will host Assam from 8th November. Bengal will reach Kolkata before boarding a flight for Surat tomorrow, on Wednesday.

“Knew that it won’t swing:” Murasingh

Hanuma Vihari was awarded the Player of the match award for his 141 in Tripura vs Bengal, Ranji Trophy, Elite Group C match.
Hanuma Vihari was awarded the Player of the Match.

Post-match, Tripura captain Manisankar Murasingh told Sportz Point that he knew there would be no swing on the final day, even with the new ball. That is why he was confident that if he could get his eye in early, three points were on the cards.

“I have grown up playing here. I knew there would be no swing or seam, even with the new ball. I got a few early boundaries, which helped us get closer to the target. This is a great comeback by the team after two defeats. It was a near-perfect game for us,” Murasinggh told.

Player of the match Hanuma Vihari shared that the battle against Mohammed Shami needed to be won early on Day 4. Moreover, he appreciated the fact that the aggressive nature of Murasingh helped him play in his own style during their 116-run partnership.

“It was a great battle with Shami. The conditions were in my favour in this match, which is why I won the battle. Tripura have been doing well in the last few seasons, and after these three points, the team would be more confident,” Hanuma told Sportz Point.

A well-deserved ton for the right-handed batter.

This is the first ton of the season from any Bengal batter.

Nov 2, 2025, 7:07 AM

Heartbreaking for Habib Gandhi

On 95, he casually lifted an inswinging ball towards the deep square leg and could not control the bat flow. Just like Sudip Chatterjee against Uttarakhand, he gets dismissed on 95.

Tripura vs Bengal, Ranji Trophy 2025-26, Day 3: Dropped catches and Vihari’s ton keep the game hanging in balance
Hanuma Vihari brought up his 25th first-class ton.

Three dropped catches, a solid 25th first-class ton from Hanuma Vihari, and wicketless Mohammed Shami - these were the highlights of day 3, Tripura vs Bengal, Group C, Ranji Trophy 2025-26 match at Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium in Agartala. Hanuma Vihari’s unbeaten 128 took Tripura close to Bengal’s 336 in the first as the home side finished on 273/7 at the end of day 3.

Bengal were bundled for 336

Bengal could only add one more run to their overnight score as Tripura captain Manishankar Murasingh’s fifth ball of the first over kept a bit low and castled the stumps of Shahbaz Ahmed, who was dismissed on 40. Despite a 108 from Sudip Gharami and 95 from Shakir Habib Gandhi, Bengal had to be satisfied with 336 in the first inning. Murasingh finished with 3 wickets, as did Rana Dutta.

Excellent start from Bengal

Everyone knew with the form Tripura batters were in and the strength of the Bengal bowling lineup, 336 was a good total on the board. Although Mohammed Shami did not strike in the first hour, it was his brother Mohammed Kaif, who took three early wickets to send the Tripura top order back to the pavilion.

Kaif dismissed Bikram Kumar Das on 19, who tried to guide the ball towards third man and played down the ball onto the stumps. Ishan Porel then rattled the stumps of Hrituraj Ghosh Roy with an inswinger, and Bengal had the early momentum.

Kaif then had a double wicket over to break into the middle order of the Tripura batting lineup. Sridam Paul could not gauge the inswinger from Kaif and lost his stumps, while Bikramjit Debanth was trapped in front of the stumps by the medium pacer two balls later.

Shahbaz Ahmed then outfoxed Swapnil Singh to lure him out of the crease, and Abishek Porel did the rest to make it 53/5 before lunch.

Hanuma Vihar’s steady ton kept Tripura in the match

With a chance of follow-on lurking on their mind, Hanuman Vihari, the 12-Test experienced professional from Andhra Pradesh, took Tripura out of the misery. However, Vihari gave two chances before making the innings look solid and perfect.

First, it was debutant wicket-keeper batter Sentu Sarkar, who looked good and provided solid support to Vihari. Their partnership of 40 off 87 balls steadied the ship a bit, though they were not out of trouble by any means. Sentu was dismissed by Bengal’s debutant Rahul Prasad, which made the scoreboard look 93/6.

Dropped catches gave Tripura an opening

First on 33, Abishek Porel could not hold on to a tough chance to his right as Kaif produced a ripper to find the edge of Hanuma Vihari. Then, on 53, it was Bengal’s stand-in captain Abishek Porel again, who missed a dolley off Ishan Porel to hand Vihari another life.

Meantime, Vijay Shankar kept on hitting occasional boundaries with the pain in his hamstring. Bengal then again had a chance to get Shankar out, but Anustup Majumdar dropped a tough chance at wide first slip to give him a chance.

Abishek Porel, who had gone out after getting injured, returned as a fielder and took a good catch to finally dismiss Vijay Shankar on 34. Kaif, with this fourth one of the inning, proved why he was a good inclusion to the playing XI.

Vihari then did not give any chance and reached his 25th first-class ton in a classy manner to keep the fight on for Tripura. Captain Manisankar Murasingh also added an unbeaten, valuable 42 off 75 to give him the support.

Bengal look to strike early with the new ball

In the final hour of the day, Bengal deliberately slowed the game down to wait for a new ball. They want to strike with the new ball early on the final day and grab those three points. But, between them and those three points will be a steady Hanuma Vihari and a calm Manisankar Murasingh.

Bengal needs three wickets while Tripura requires 63 runs in a battle for three points in Agartala. Check our LIVE blog to check real-time updates of Day 4.

Tripura captain Manisankar Murasingh won the toss and asked the Bengal team to bat first under a bit cloudy and gloomy conditions. As we had already revealed in our preview, all-rounder Rahul Prasad made his first-class debut, Kazi Junaid Saifi and Shakir Habib Gandhi replaced Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sudip Chatterjee, while Mohammed Kaif replaced Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal in the playing XI. Tripura also made three changes to their lineup from the last match.

Tripura’s decision to bowl first came into action when Abhijit Sarkar dismissed Kazi Junaid Saifi in the second over of the inning. The controversial dismissal saw batter Saifi being dissatisfied with the decision and also receiving a caution from the match referee.

Tripura’s start would have been perfect if Hrituraj Roy had not dropped an easy catch in the second slip off Rana Dutta when Sudip Gharami was on 20.

Gharami made sure he paid them back with a solid inning of 70 off 169 balls while striking his third consecutive fifty of the season.

But it was Shakir Habib Gandhi, who, went against his nature, started slow, and coped a few on the body to ensure Bengal did not lose any other wicket after the early dismissal. Gandhi took time, and they capitalised on loose balls and hit boundaries against the spin bowling to reach his maiden first-class fifty.

Bengal reached 150/1 in 52 overs when tea was called, with Sudip Kumar Gharami 65(150) and Shakir Habib Gandhi 70(158) starting to add some quick runs. Post tea, only when Habib started to become more aggressive, the clouds came, and only 8 more overs could have been bowled before the umpires called it a day.

Bengal’s plan on Day 2

After the end of Day 1’s play, Bengal batter Sudip Gharami shared with Sportz Point that the wicket is good to bat on, but the early morning dew made the ball seam a bit. Moreover, the disciplined bowling from Tripura also made it tougher for them to score early in the first session.

But, as the sun came out, the pitch got easier, and there was not that much of a threat from the Tripura bowlers as well. On Bengal’s plan for day 2, batter Shakir Habib Gandhi told Sportz Point, “We would look to bat the entire Day 2 and score as much as possible and then look to bowl them out twice in this match.”

However, as we write this report, Agartala has already seen a slight drizzle, and a forthcoming rain on Day 2 might massacre the plans of the Bengal team as they will have to play a tight game with time and weather alongside the Tripura team.

Day 1 score summary:

Day 1: Stumps - Bengal: 171/1 (60 overs) | Sudip Kumar Gharami 70(169), Shakir Habib Gandhi 82(187)

There comes a moment or year in every cricketer’s journey that makes or breaks them. Some crumble under pressure, and some thrive. Bengal wicket-keeper batter Abishek Porel, despite being rated really high, has not delivered that in red-ball cricket so far. But, from tomorrow onwards, the scene might change. The 23-year-old wicket-keeper batter, who has always done well whenever he has led a team, will become Bengal’s latest captain in first-class cricket.

“Absolutely honoured”

Abishek Porel will lead the Bengal men’s senior team in the absence of Abhimanyu Easwaran, who will be unavailable for two games due to India-A games. Porel was named the vice-captain at the start of the season. Though there were rumours that Anustup Majumdar, who was captain last season, might lead the team for these two games, Bengal management wanted Porel to lead the team.

“Absolutely honoured. A big thank you to the Cricket Association of Bengal, Laxmi (Ratan Shukla) da, and all the seniors for trusting me with the responsibility. It is a big achievement for me,” Porel told Sportz Point in an exclusive interview.

“It was my dream to lead Bengal”

Exclusive Tripura vs Bengal: Shami vs Vihari; flatter pitch, and a new captain in focus in Tripura | sportzpoint.com
Abishek Porel (on left) with Laxmi Ratan Shukla during the practice session ahead of Tripura vs Bengal match.

During his U-16 and U-19 days, Abishek Porel has led Bengal in the past. Not only that, Bengal U-19 did well under him, and he, himself, scored three centuries in four innings in the Cooch Behar Trophy 2022 as captain.

From leading the U-19 team, and now getting a chance to lead a team that has been led by greats like Pankaj Roy, Sourav Ganguly, and Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Porel wants to create his own pathway as a leader.

“It was my dream to lead Bengal and take the team home with responsibilities on my shoulders,” Porel shared.

But, U-19s and senior cricket are different than anyone can ever imagine. In under-age cricket, you mostly lead players of your age or players younger than you. The senior cricket throws a different challenge at you. You might have to lead players who are nearly twice the age or have played double the number of matches in their careers.

In his debut match as captain, he will lead his elder cousin brother Ishan Porel, along with Anustup Majumdar, someone whom he has idolised since his childhood, and Mohammed Shami, who has over 500 international wickets to his name.

“Although I am younger than Ruku (Anustup Majumdar) da, Shami bhai, and dada (Ishan Porel), I have played many matches with them in the last three years. They have never let me feel like I am younger than them. They all were very frank with me, including Manoj Tiwary, my first captain.”

“I am blessed that I am getting players like them in my first match as captain.”

Sourav Ganguly, one of the greatest captains from Bengal, had picked Porel for the Delhi Capitals a few seasons back, which changed his career overnight. Since then, Gauguly has been consistently working hard to get the best of the young keeper batter.

The ‘Prince of Calcutta’, who is currently the President of C.A.B., congratulated the youngster and wants Porel not to think too much about the captaincy, and rather keep doing what he has been doing in the last few years.

“He congratulated me. He told me that I will have to take responsibility. It is a big deal and responsibility to lead Bengal. He told me to me myself and think it just as an added stamp beside my name,” Porel expressed.

“I am not taking it as pressure. It is an absolute privilege and I am honoured to be able to lead Bengal. I enjoy captaincy. I led Bengal in the Buchi Babu tournament. I love responsibilities.”
